That was a good post cyclone write up Colmait. I too also find the information and explanations given by Anthony Cornelius very informative and accurate and agree with his use of the phrase "transitioned to an ex-tropical cyclone". I feel the use of the word weakened can lead people into a sense of complacency and "it's only an ex cyclone now" type thinking, not realising the actual danger still posed by the weather system.

We took the kids over to Scarborough Beach yesterday to play. There was a small amount of erosion but nothing like what happened down the Gold Coast. A bit of debris on the beach but nothing too bad. The islands are no doubt what saved the beach.

I read an interesting article called "Changes to Building Code urged as Cyclone Alfred bears down on SEQ" in the Aust Financial Review. This was one of the quotes in the article which fits in with what Colmait mentioned regarding building codes:

"Davina Rooney, chief executive of the Green Building Council of Australia, said Australia had strong building codes, but they must continue to evolve to meet the reality of extreme weather events such as Cyclone Alfred.

“It’s been 50 years since an event like this has struck Brisbane, but science shows that a changing climate will push cyclones further south and into highly populated areas like south-east Queensland and NSW – more homes than ever are in their path and at risk.

“Regular updates to the National Construction Code are essential to ensure homes are more resilient, reducing disaster recovery costs and better protecting communities.”

It will be very interesting to see what changes if any come to building codes, the BOM structure, alerts and warnings etc after the anaylsis of the aftermath of Cyclone Alfred.
