Virga is rain, snow or sometimes small hail that falls but does not hit the ground. It evaporates as it fallls, sometimes at high altitudes and sometimes at lower altitudes.

Thank you so much for that explanation Colmait and the diagram and photos. That first photo you posted is amazing - it is actually quite eerie looking. In your post at 7.51pm last night you mentioned about there being rotation seen on the doppler and radar over Archerfield. I have looked back a number of times at the radar sweeps and doppler sweeps from last night and am none the wiser. I don't know what I should look for to see rotation, especially on the doppler. When you have some time to spare could you possible show me an image that shows rotation, particularly on the doppler. It was nice to finally have a storm come to fruition after all the maybe it will, maybe it wont days this past week.
