There was a 4 deg difference minimum temp between the Cairns aero 15.9 deg c and the race course ,12.1deg last night. Can anyone explain why that would be?

Some quite strong winds making their way all up the east coast to far nth QLD.

At 12.30pm today, the Cairns aero is 43km/hr with gust of 56km/hr.

I believe the winds flowing in to the NT and Far NW have triggered fire alerts lately.

The racecourse, being slightly inland, less susceptible to maritime influence when the homogenizing SE winds are not so dominant. Notice last night strong SE'ers have increased to mins to within 0.6c of each other, and even above average - a full 10c warmer than 7 days ago.

Records for 2022: 1520mm
2023: 2710mm 2024: 951.6mm (no records April-Sept)

It would seem Queensland is not imagining the cold nights this past week . The BOM results tell all.

Cool

Another very cold night! I'm at Bilyana at the moment. I've not seen such a sustained cold period in the 24 years I've lived in Townsville, and certainly not the last 11 years I've had Bilyana. Just astonishing.

Well, comparing the first 18 days of September to this time last year:

Mean minumum 2018 - 17.1C
Mean minimum 2019 - 12.4C

Big difference!

Between May and September last year, Townsville had 66 nights below 15C. Of those, 10 have been below 10C.

Between May and September this year, Townsville has had 70 nights below 15C. Of those, 15 have been below 10C.

Not as big of a difference there, but noticable.

I am up in Mossman today seeing a customer for work about about to head back to Cairns to fly back to Brissy. Sad
I am so jealous of you all. The weather up here is absolutely stunning today, with lovely warm temperatures and some lovely humidity to get the dust out of my nose from the last few weeks in Brisbane.
You lucky people.

Finally some tropical dew points tonight.
Cairns 18.3
Cooktown 19.6
Innisfail 19.9

I noticed plenty of cloud pouring in from the coral sea on the satellite today especially further north.

A min of 22.5 deg c last night. 30 deg c at lunchtime. What a contrast. What a flip of the coin.
Welcome back tropics

Another pleasant start to the day, with little wind.
I guess I should take the dog out and get a paper and then my work for today is complete! Enjoy the weekend everyone! Cool

A bit of wet stuff looks to be forecast for tomorrow and Friday and some reasonable wind too.
Can't complain I guess. Sunshine for the long weekend :-)

Went down to Hinchenbrook for a long weekend last week, was awesome.

Had to catch up on work but there seems to be around 10+mm in my gauge from earlier this week.

BOM climate data showing much of QLD and the NT minimum overnight temperatures have been continuing to run a few degrees cooler than average for October so far.

Looking back on last month.
