The blaze burnt through 2,000 hectares of bush containing a prime koala breeding ground in New South Wales, around 250 miles north of Sydney. Rescuers said the deaths were particularly tragic as the koalas were a diverse breed, with one expert calling it a "national tragedy". The native species has suffered significant decline in recent decades. Monitoring groups say koala numbers are falling, with as few as 43,000 left in the wild. Their decline has been blamed on habitat loss, disease, dog attacks and climate change.

Wow. The smoke from the fire at Belrose is pretty thick. I can see it from the CBD quite clearly.

Very heavy smoke haze here this morning with viability down to around 2000 meters. Kaputar fire has flared up again. Sky was un-observable at 9:00 am when I went to do the obs. Temps forecast to ramp up in the coming days, expecting high 30`s later in the week. |

A few storms about yesterday afternoon from 2:00 pm till around 7:30. Only measured 2.6 mm in the gauge but have heard reports of up to 10 mm south of town. Humidity was at 63% & a dew point of 15.2 at 9 am.
SE winds have bought the smoke back again, viability was down to around 7 km this morning.
Forecast is for more storms this arvo, so hoping for some more precipitation. |

So glad to hear you have been having showery rain to settle the dust and get some moisture into the ground. Better than 100mm in one go!
Have you foot any green shoots appearing or any grass starting to grow?

We have moved to Level 3 water restrictions as of today. We now are sharing our water with another town downstream as they have run out of water. The dam is presently at 1.04% or 7300 megaliters which the local council says should supply both towns for 2 years. |
