Not your imagination Dormant, the image used to go out as far as the radar could “see”. Why it’s being limited like that I don’t know.

Not quite, my mother (as a medical student) was housed in a tube station at night and then had to go out and collect the dead and wounded during the blitz. Does that count?

Admirable, Weary. Most of my reading is autobiographies of the first half twentieth century, especially WWII.
My late husband was in the US Navy during WWII, err he was a tad older.
We see JTWC (I have trouble remembering the name of that site and have to repeat, junior technician water closet) telling us that GLOBAL MODELS INDICATE INVEST 94P (our potential cyclone) WILL TRACK GENERALLY EASTWARD OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS ARE ESTIMATED AT 20 TO 25 KNOTS.THE POTENTIAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SIGNIFICANT TROPICAL CYCLONE WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS REMAINS MEDIUM.

Agree with you Dormant about the Weipa 512 Radar. It's the same with Cairns 512 with it rain being cut off. It was never like that before.
Guess we can thank more government cuts for that.

Bom now have crossing the peninsula as a low and sitting off Lockhart. Great, it can spin up into a Cyclone from there and hit Cairns😡

Yes, there has been a lot of chopping and changing with it, first heading west, the sth west, now east... A couple of light spits early this morning, but otherwise a nice sunny day, must say the mornings have been coolish, have even resorted to getting under the sheet during the night. Thunderstorms are forecast for tomorrow, seem there are heaps of flying termite around (yesterday and today) also noticed a lot of Queen green ants wandering around.

Despite not being able to see in the gap between I took a chance and went to Cairns today. Was a lovely day, high thin cloud and rather hot.
Checking the radar circles around the country the only ones with the peculiar 200km circle rendition are the Weipa and Cairns ones. The rest do seem to have a composite using info from adjacent radar sites out to 500k plus. I'm disturbed that the cyclone prone areas are so poorly rendered with rain bands which could indicate rotation or direction cut off over a distance of approximately 180km.

I've sort of lost confidence in the radar from when it was out of action for so long.
When you look at the single image of Cairns 512 there are massive gaps. There used to be gaps at the edges, but nothing like what we currently (don't) see.
Getting nice & black in the northwest. Getting that pre-pre-storm feeling & nothing happening. Lol.
Still, it's been good overcast weather so plants aren't wilting. May have to start watering again in the next couple days.

Yeah the radar situation is poor form on the Bom's part. But at least both Cairns & Weipa are working.
11mmm here this morning.
Cheers

I braved the BOM feedback process to ask why Weipa and Cairns radar images are limited to 256 km ATM, expect an answer in a couple of weeks.

Now a wait to see what they say. EDIT: I've just used the feedback form to ask them as well. Here's the link if anyone wants it. http://www.bom.gov.au/other/feedback/?ref=ftrEdited by user Thursday, 28 January 2021 9:52:25 AM(UTC)

Just started pouring here, interrupting our tv watching over dinner, lol, tin roofs do resonate well. Glad we made town yesterday, never needed to fire up my pathetic ancient notebook, which has a massive black dead pixel blob in the middle, outside Bunnings to see if we needed to bail from town and hotfoot it home. But today we would have bailed as it seems the rain was on and off frequently.
Hey ho, life's good hibernating with plenty of supplies and a couple hundred unread books.
Glad you two, Weary and 28, are inquiring of the powers that be of the why's and wherefores of the radar.

Yeah, really bad blind spot to the S of the radar now. Really bad for storms coming off the tablelands to Gvale. Like someone's put a bloody stick in front of the radar. |
