A quick one. Telstra mobile has had NO SERVICE for over a week.
Even our Post Office can't do any transactions. Great. Just shut down the town.
I have no idea what's going on in the world, no idea what's happening with the weather...
But...
We had 50mm last night.
I'm in Dimbulah at moment. Must've been heavy rain. The long gras is flattened everywhere.
I'll be back if Telstra ever reconnects us.
Rant over.

Ended up with 77mm here this morning.
That's a good reason to have a rant 28. Imagine if that happened in a capital city.

Yeah the radar looked great around midnight..must have been a doozy of a storm..plenty of thunder here but we only got 16.5 mm out of it..it was supposed to be a bit wild up around mareeba as well.. and remember nearly 6 months ago the Optus outage in melbourne just about shut the whole city down and had people going crazy...yet that was just for 7 hours but it was like the world had stopped for the poor city folk.. That length of time must be so frustrating 28 but are still on a telstra landline and the service has been terrible for at least 10 years now..there is just no real accountability anymore.. and SM your line about not travelling further south then Townsville reminded me of working in the Banana's here almost 30 years back and some of the local lads hasselling the backpackers about their travels..there was hardlyy any only a handful of backpackers here those days..some of these provincial young fellas were boasting about never having travelled anywhere further then townnsville in their entire lives and stating that they dont know why anyone would want to because Tully had everything anyone would ever need...I used to have a chuckle at their narrow view of the world...

Totally missed out last night. 1mm from the very edge of a storm in the Arvo that just couldn't get down the valley.
Been wondering if you were offline 28, seen a few radar images that I thought you should be happy with. :)
Scott was a fella here in Mossman never been past Gordonvale :) and only been to Cairns a couple of times in his 70 odd years. He was proud as punch telling anyone who would listen.
Bit surprised by the last couple of days of fine sunny weather, forecasts have backed off a lot with just showers now for the weekend. It's Easter it will rain in the Daintree :)
I wonder what April has in store for us all .
Cheers

Phew.
Made it back over Eureka Creek at Dimbulah.
Stuck at Pump Creek Almaden, probably for the night...
The creek is raging & still seems to be rising. Never seen it like this.
Telstra mobile won't be back on til Saturday, supposedly.

Picked up 125mm this morning :) Very nice wet night, with all the creeks back up this morning. Rain cleared on daylight for had a nice walk with the dog :)
Hope you get home safe 28. But great to hear the creeks out there have had a nice flush as well.
Showers look to be building off the coast now, so this could be the start of our wet weekend they have told us to expect
Cheers

21mm here. Looks like you have inched ahead of Tully sugar mill year to date figures by about 80mm or so Bunyip..and yeah nothing really wrong with being happy with living out a simple life in your hometown but it just seems like a strange thing to boast about doesnt it...lol..me, I couldnt wait to save some money and strap a backpack on and go roam the world..best thing i ever did and met my future missus as well...these days now I'm pretty much a homebody that doesnt like sleeping anywhere but in my own comfy bed surrounded by my little farm..lol...but my earlier travels at least have taught me to be eternally grateful for what I have and how lucky we are to live in this country....but i could have saved all that by just asking your old mate in Mossman..i'm sure he would have told me so anyway... Hey 28 were you just stuck on the side of the road at a flooded causeway...?...Dont suppose that happens to often out your way does it..?

1mm here. Those showers out to sea are looking promising. Hopefully a couple of wet days coming up as you say Bunyip. Probably more likely in the Daintree and on the Cassowary Coast. I hope everything went well 28. The radar looked like heavy rain out your way last night. My wife has in-laws who have lived in Babinda all their lives, only going to Cairns every now and then to shop or see a specialist. We all travelled to Brisbane for a wedding once and that was a major event for them. A bit like going to Mars almost. Edit: Looks like 20-30Kn SE forecast for Saturday. Another nice wet night but with only 63mm :)
Yeah Scott, I left home before I was 15 and traveled the whole country on my thumb. Spent 2.5 years in Southern Africa before I was 22 and returned to Oz with a new outlook. We are very much the lucky country or at least were back then, things don't look so good these days unfortunately. Used to tell old Norm stories of my travels and he would just say why bother :) We got all we need right here boy ... :) :)
So many people traveled so far to come to FNQ from all over the world, too build it up to what it is now, yet there seems to be more people from the north that never traveled than in other areas of the country. Strange ??
Happy Easter all, if you have to go out on the roads ,please stay safe.
Cheers

So another 20mm difference between the two Cairns Airport rainfall monitoring stations. As to their locations. One just measures rainfall and is probs located at the BOM station at the airport (as suggested by SM?) The second measures rain and also Barron R height and so is at the northern end of the runway. Will now try to insert a map You can see the Cairns Airport Alert and the Cairns AWS

Just 21mm here but 120mm in Tully town.. South Johnstone Bridge is over with some bigger falls along the coastal ranges also.. https://qldtraffic.qld.g...dj29_VjzmLw5wlVIkCwS44XLCairns just continues to deliver SM.. Thats interesting weary that really both stations are in pretty close proximity with no geographical features nearby to explain often an inch or more difference one way or another...must just be the hit or miss nature of the localised showers...the radar currently has them moving pretty quickly from the East and Sou' east.. Bunyip one of the many charms of FNQ when i first came up here 35 years back was the provincial backward nature of many of the residents and local customs and more relaxed lifestyle.. Its changed a lot since then and I'm not sure how much for the better..now its lots more speculative development, out of towners moving up for a quick buck after cyclones and during growth booms or to semi-retire and take on some lawn mowing or handyman work or a small cafe/ fish and chip shop and the usual city dreamers yearning for their piece of a tropical Bali-like holiday lifestyle or retirement whilst bringing annoying city hangups.... .thankfully wet seasons like this one come along occasionally and thin out those fair-weather types or give them a serious reality check and make them wonder what the hell they were thinking.... it was the best day ever when that Mayfair 101 guy James Mahwhinney went bust...fancy wanting to turn Mission beach into a Superyacht hub and 1.6 Billion dollar tourist town and buying up more then 200 local properties to redevelop.. 4-5 months of wet season and then the same of 15-20 knot Sou easters meant it would have been a bust anyway..but it sure would have destroyed the village atmosphere....we would have sold up and moved for sure.. Mobile service restored at 2pm today. Trying to clean up ten days of emails, texts, notifications, subscriptions...😱
Got to Pump Creek the other night about 5pm. The real 4WDs crossed about 6.30pm. Then we had a pretty good storm pass over & the creek rose right up again. Three vehicles waiting, finally crossed at 11pm. Lived here 14 years, and it's only the third time I've ever been held up at Pump Creek.

109mm here this morning :) this takes me to just over 3m with 3005mm YTD Yes typical Easter weather, just laugh when I see people all loaded up to go camping. Yeah Scott these good wets sort a few out, the for sale signs have started to go up around here already :) And yes that development was a real bad idea right from the get go, can't see how it ever really started. Glad you go home safe in the end 28. Cheers Edited by user Sunday, 31 March 2024 6:40:37 AM(UTC)

Good to see you back online 28. Good rain out your way lately. 57mm here this morning, a lot of that fell before lunch yesterday. Showery and breezy overnight and today. 1977.5mm here so far this year, 3138.5 for DEC-MAR. That's a great wet for this area. Edit: What's amazing is it was suppose to be an El Nino year. Dunno whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Edit: Mostly had small falls, 2mm and 4mm. Monday 25th we had 15mm, Wed 27th was a lovely 50mm, Thursday was 18mm. A bit odd: Received an Early Warning Network notification yesterday advising flooding on the Cape down to Mount Surprise, with this map. https://alerts3.ewn.com....3427_FW-QLD-20240330.pngNothing on the radar, nothing predicted for inland areas. Joined up eons ago, when first offered. I don't know that it was ever accurate. And being in the corner of 3 different weather districts, we get a notification for all of them. Most events fizzle out before they reach us, from which ever direction. LOL. Looks like we might've had about 163mm for March, and 982mm 1st January to 31 March. (If I've added up right...😝) Edited by user Sunday, 31 March 2024 12:27:07 PM(UTC)

Just 7mm in the past 2 days...
and horribly cooler temps day and night...yeah I know some people love it but not this little black duck..!
4pm's swims in the creek might have to be talken a little earlier when there is still some sun on the water to take the chill out..
I see a bit of rain forecast later in the week but cant help thinking maybe the actual wet is really over..??
How lovely would it be to actually transition into a mostly dry winter for once...
I see the BOM 3 month forecast showing around 50% chance along the coast of exceeding average rainfall with a little higher on the tablelands and out 28's way....Does 50% mean we can expect it to be average ..?... I dont emntirely understand as there is no facility on the graphs that shows if there is a chance of getting below median rainfall..?
Glad you got home safely 28 and yeah often even things that dont go to plan can still be an adventure in some ways..
