another 64mm in the past 24...and still lightly showering all morning..

I feel sorry for all the Carney's trying to set up for the Tully Show Tomorrow night..

We have been there in the past during wet periods and the whole length of the concourse turns into an absolute mudpit on the first night...it probably already is now from just the guys trying to set up before the show even starts..200mm of rain is a lot over a couple of days this time of year with continuing showers and no sun..

89mm up here this morning :) Gives me 413mm for July so far , my 20 year avg is only 148mm
Last July was my previous wettest with 296mm so still over 100 more ...

Useless Government dept, how can you turn on the radar for about 4hrs then off for another week ..
In most places they could of built a completely new site and had it operational in that time.
Builder mates are pissed big time..

Cheers

139.5mm in July. That's the highest I've recorded here. Next high was 126mm in 2016, average is 58 so it was quite a wet month for this area.

Hopefully we get the radar back this week. Just in time for the dry.

the feral wet drizzle of a failed winter continues, 2700mm for my place so far this year with a wet june and july and looking like a continuation for rest of the week. Looks like bunyip is surging ahead with a good chance of retaining his golden gumboot with some big numbers.

15mm here this morning turns me over to 3800mm YTD

It's cold, wet and slopy and nothing is growing real well.

What gets me about this radar is that I can watch storm chasers in the US live stream Doppler Radar from a pickup truck
and it takes our useless BoM 9 weeks+ to do maintenance, surely they could have a mobile unit to move around as needed.
It does not need to be as good as the main unit but even a 50km reach would give general indication of weather movement.

Cheers

One has to wonder what the hell they're doing that is taking so long. Even Telstra is faster...

5.5mm in the gauge this morning. It's been a slow crawl to 2000 but finally got there. Highest here was 3026.5mm in 2011. Don't think we'll break that this year though.

Your right Bunyip, the amount of weather gear those US storm chasers carry in their vehicles is amazing.

I agree Bunyip..How many tradies, business owners, farmers etc use the radar on a daily basis to plan their work..?

I guess it kind of shows a general decline of society that these Government departments dont care..Even all the companies that move to faceless interaction like call centres in India or Asai where you cant get any commonsense or solutions happening...even Telstra these days is such a pain to deal with...a few decades ago people used to pride themselves on getting services sorted out ASAP ..These days the only ones I find with that same enthusiasm are ERGON crews who will get out there anytime and anyweather to get the power backup and running asap..

Still showering down here but we did get a break for long enough yesterday to take a wade out to King Reef off Kurrimine Beach on the 0.1m low tide but after a couple of Km's wading I am a bit slow on the draw today....

The ERGON crews are great. Except for extreme situations they're out here fixing things almost immediately.

We just had a nice short sharp shower, which gave us just on 4mm. Very nice, for this time of year.

Edit, some time later: Just had a brief flicker of the lights. Hopefully not in danger of losing power tonight. Annoying not having the radar. Hope it's finally up and running next week.

Zoom Earth gives an idea of cloud cover, up to 20 minutes ago.

Been an odd afternoon. Had a little more rain for a minute or so. Still trying with the occasional short faint splatter. Gusty winds, a bit on the monsoonal side, leaf litter on the roads.

Yes Ergon are great to deal with and the linesmen do a fantastic job in some awful conditions at times.

The bureau is taking the piss i dont expect any less though, rainfall updates are still sent via horse and cart from cape tribulation to melbourne head office, data takes approx 4 months to get there in 2023. Comedians should be making jokes about this in there stand up acts but i doubt they are aware.

Another vote for Ergon linesmen, stayed in the same accommodation as them in Airlie immediately after cyclone Debbie. They really put the hours in and stayed safe.

Also they powered the accom with the biggest “portable” gennie I have ever seen…. Think semi trailer size.

Yes it's quite beyond a joke now..
They could at least supply an explanation as what the hell they are doing and why it is taking so long. Cursing Cursing
How was it able to be up for 4 hours on Friday the 28/07 then back to this??

I guess we should be thankful for not living in Mackay...

Theirs is unavailable for 6 months..Confused

The Chinese could build a whole new city in that time..

Meanwhile no radar needed today...Blue sky everywhere this morning...Even the dogs turned all frisky and were frolicking about outside in the mud this morning..

You're right, the Chinese could probably build that whole city - and a completely new freeway complex as well to access it.

Poor Mackay. Six months is shocking. It's HALF A YEAR.

We're now heading for four months. An explanation would go a long way for good public relations. Really, I can't see how "...routine service works that will maintain and enhance its operational capabilities" could possibly take so long. Wonder what "enhance" means. My paranoid mind is wondering if they're adding US technology for whatever purposes.

Yesterday was a bit on the cool side, jumpers on. Tried to rain a few times, hours apart. Today is glorious. Couldn't get a bluer sky. Pretty windy though. I use racks to dry my laundry and have had to anchor them down.

37.5mm here already this month, well above the average of 16. After the wet July the yard just doesn't want to dry out. The cool weather don't help.

It's been very windy here, I don't think the offshore fishing scene is looking good for a couple of weeks.

It sounds like the Radar debacle is just symptomatic of a culture of mediocracy that exists at the BOM and Public serice in general and of course no accountability for anything...

Just so much waste and inefficiency..almost a billion dollars spent on a computer and so much of it on "consultants"...

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/aug/06/bureau-of-meteorology-super-computer-delays-bungle-summer-weather-fire-cyclone-alert-warning?bingParse

There should be an inquiry into whole department is run..something stinks badly...whether its kickbacks for contracts or just pure stupidity but its just a trainwreck.

and may as well have one for the ABC as well...its so dissapointing that what was once a great platform for rural australia has been hijacked and turned into a mouthpiece for the inner city leftists..
