A few showers starting to come through now, about 7mm so far tonight. I read a bit on FB tonight about Narelle and most of it is ridiculous. On your question Scott, maybe Cyclone Monica in 2006. 23.5mm here this morning. Showers and wind have picked up a little this morning. Narelle appears to be sticking to the forecast track.

Tropical Tidbits image from 8 MAR for today shows the GFS model did fairly well with this cyclone. At that time it had it moving SE from that position though towards the graveyard.  Edit: I must be getting old, did a bit of research and it was Cyclone Ingrid in MAR 2005 which scared us in Port Douglas. It stuck Qld, NT and WA as a severe cyclone. Quiet at Bunnings, blustery and buffeting at Jonsson's. And a wild drive up the Range in heavy rain, cloud, leaves and twigs everywhere, and the roadworks. Is it windy down there now? Screenshots of Narelle from ZoomEarth. A thing of beauty, but I'm glad I'm not under it.

2100hrs: Not much wind in White Rock 28, just a bit breezy here at the moment. Incredibly with a Cat5 cyclone 200nm north of Cairns we've had 7mm of rain so far today. Another image of Narelle from BOM at 1940hrs.

I'm sure you will start seeing some squally rainbands overnight SM..might create quite a mess in the NT with all the flooding already happening over there.. Its not a huge system but its sure starting to look mean and very organised and yeah 28, nature is amazing isnt it.....I wonder is she will undergo a eyewall replacement before landfall that may take some sting out... Hate to say it but I'm so glad its up there and not down here....certainly wouldnt want to go through the eye of that sucker.. Good morning folks :)
Hope you all had a good night, got up a few times with rain squalls and wind blowing through
but daylight revealed nothing major down, just a few branches. Managed to walk the dog in
a break and stay dry :)
Narelle has been a nice tight system and sure is marching along, dropped back to a cat4
around 04:30. I'm sure she is making a mess up where she is crossing.
Went to school with a Narelle, She was a bit wild too, lol :)
No new flooding up here with only 56mm in the gauge this morning.

All quiet in Mareeba overnight. Just drove down to Cairns again. Not too bad considering the heavy rain and blustery winds. Dark on the Range with the overhanging trees. Appointment at 8:30 - think I'll be straight back up the range ASAP after it. Some more pretty pictures of Narelle...

Nothing to report here..its quite workable outdoors with just random showers...
Might pick up a bit later with showers on an easterly flow showing up on the radar on their way..
Narelle made landfall as a Cat 4 and thankfully it seems the high wind area radius was not huge...except of course in the Media and Facebook where its constantly labelled a "Monster storm", catasphophic and Doom have also been mentioned as well as the most powerfall storm to hit QLD since Cyclone Mahina in 1899...
Still a high end Cat 4 is nothing to sneeze at and no doubt there will be extensive damage to homes,sheds and of course the scrub up there around Coen...I hate the damage these high end cyclones do to the vegetation and critters..its just horrible...sure would have done a number if she had of been pointed at Cairns though..!!..The wind measuring equiptment near Coen failed early on apparently so I guess we will wait to see what the analysis says about the storm...as 28 keeps posting pics she sure looked pretty on those sat pics..
SST's are still 28c plus north of Townsville so still plenty of time left if the other conditions present for us to get a spinner this season...nights are cooling down nicely though so hopefully change of season is just around the corner..I'm over this wet season already..
Nice to hear Daintree escaped anything major..I'm sure you guys up there are also over this wet season too..!

A pretty normal trip up the Range. I could've stayed in Cairns and done everything on my list. A few nice waterfalls though.

Light rain with heavy overcast sky here this morning. 64.5mm in the gauge from occasional heavy showers overnight. Narelle seemed to follow the forecast track fairly closely all the way into the Coen area. A good bit of flooding around Archer River by the look of the Qld Traffic image of water lapping the new bridge there today. Would have thought you got more rain then that SM....
So looking at the radar I cant see any rain at all the the south and east of Narelle...only on the NW quadrant...does that look right or is just the radar not picking it up..?
I also wondered if the vegetation damage will be far less up there then what we would expect down here due to the shorter drier scrubby vegetation type compared to our taller, denser, often vine- coated softer rainforest vegetation that just collapses when faced with strong winds..?

Narelle does look like half a cyclone on the radar at the moment. Maybe there is a blind spot between the Cairns and Weipa radars. It seems to be still dumping lots of rain up in that area. Edit: The BOM needs to make their weather stations a bit more robust. The Coen one dropped out when the winds were only gusting to 28 knots. Edited by user Friday, 20 March 2026 2:30:57 PM(UTC)
