76mm overnight..
Seems that the cyclone forecast is firming but steering influences suggest that it will head East or Sou-east according to the boffins...
Doesn't look like any good fishing weather in the next week or so and when we were out last week there were logs floating around all the way to the edge of the continental shelf..as well as the ones floating around in open water we saw quite a few logs and debris caught up in eddies on the reefs....I wasn't game to move spots after dark..

Dangerous after floods. Us landlubbers kind of forget that happens. Nicked down to Cairns today. Eureka Creek was almost at the bridge, so I hoped it was actually going down rather than coming up. Thankfully it was a little lower on the way home. Drove home later than usual, dodging animals, live & dead, all the way. Rained most of the way from Mareeba, including the last bit to Chillagoe. Found 4mm in the gauge from the late afternoon sprinkle. Hopefully the low will at least bring us a bit more rain.

Went out 2 Sundays ago, one or two sticks about from the King tides, that was about it. Last trip I did out of Moroulyan I waited until daylight before knocking the throttle down. 80mm here for the past 24 hrs and only another 56mm needed to make consecutive 1000mm+ months. On the subject of radars i find bommap the best http://bommap.com/Default.aspx?ID=19it still uses the 512km radar (on the google maps overlay), and you can zoom in much much further that the normal fixed map (you can even zoom it right to your house)

Yes, that is how it has always been, but i suppose the closer you get the larger the pixels. First cyclone advice for the current system.

If the low forms a TC,- looks like they're going to call it TC Niran.  What sort of dumb name is that for a cyclone ? Usually expect the weird names when Fiji names them.

Yep strange name, must be inclusive of something..
77mm here this morning, was heavy rain just before dark last night, had to ride the quad home in it..
Looks like all the action will be south of us here :(
More waiting and watching.

Been watching the blue blob on the coast. Envious, but at least it's cloudy most of the time, and catching the odd millimetre here & there.
Looks like we might get a sprinkle again soon, but it could still slip up to the east of us.

Nice steady rain for the last half hour or so, and just 23.3°C.
Well,- Feb is statistically the wettest month,- now into the 2nd wettest month of the year. See what happens.
Some barely noticeable rotation just ENE of about Babinda. MSLP around 995 hPa.

Ron, is the blind spot in the Cairns radar a relatively recent thing? I don’t recall seeing it before you mentioned it.

I will happily admit I know bugger all about interpreting Doppler radar images. The red patches in the blue down Cassowary Coast show that the wind is going away from the radar(red) surrounded by wind going towards the radar (blue). Storm cells?. Any ideas? EDIT . When doubt read the BOM help pages. Apparently the Cairns Doppler can only read up 96 kmph. When it gets above that speed it shows it as going in the opposite direction to its real direction . Yes weary..they were explaining that on Oz cyclone FB page..
Called it "velocity folding"..
I'll just call windy as shit..!..its a mess here already with bamboo culms down everywhere and quite a bit of tree debris about...we are in a bit of a wind tunnel here though...
The BOM have forecast it to reach cyclone strength by tomorrow morning..I wonder if it might get there sooner then that..

Windy as, here also. the rain has steadily picked up since this morning, palm fronds are down everywhere and a few trees have bit the dust, or should i say mud?
Must say it is bloody cold, i had to resort to putting pants on!

Wow. Hard to comprehend from here. Darkish skies. Very calm. 26°C on the deck. Telstra mobile outage this morning 3.5 hours. Landlines not working, nor of course was Sky Muster... Payphones not working either. Weird feeling disconnected from the world especially with a potential cyclone suiting nearby. National radar shows a pretty extended sweep. Weipa looks wet. Hope it doesn't get too messy for you all. Edit: Someone on twitter said Townsville radar is out, and Kahlpahlim Rock is blocking Cairns radar. Haven't heard of that before. Twitter's busy.
