Awesome @28, must be nearly a record out there.
only 459.2mm here, nice and damp, but not ridiculous. Some big 200+mm falls Babinda way night before last. |

A correction to the monthly total here, ended up with 658mm. Bit of bad mathematics. To many numbers to add, we only had 5 days without rain in January. Still not a bad drop.

Could hear a lot of thunder out to the west yesterday arvo. It looked like we would get some of that stormy action for a while. Didn't quite make it this far. Only 2mm in the gauge. Good start to FEB 28 and tropo.

Geezuz it was a steamy one today, could see that storm formation up at Cape Trib from S Cairns this arv looked good. 3mm here this morning. |

Wow, this is fun. We're actually getting real storms this Wet. Just had a small one go over. Little bit of lightning & a couple rumbles. Light rain you couldn't actually hear falling. Light's flickered though.
Power returned last night at 7pm. Mobile communication was out this morning after the storm, til 9am. People lost their copper landlines as well. Some services restored, some will take days.

Ron that storm sounded great but slipped behind the mountain and got Cape Trib and we just managed to get the very edge of it, might be a couple of mm in the gauge.
And oh boy was it steamy, managed to get a few areas mown and got a good sun burn for my efforts.. lol
28 you are having a fantastic wet, so happy for you out there.

Thanks Bunyip. It's pretty amazing isn't it. I remember when I first joined Weatherzone forum after Yasi, that I someone said they envied me the storms out here. Now I know what he meant. This is the first year we've had so many. It's almost like Yasi sucked up all the water & changed the electromagnetic forces. For years the only storms we got were small clusters of cells over Georgetown way that would take hours to work their way up to us, then split each side of town. Again and again. EDIT: Oops, did I speak too soon. Checking possible rain, looks like we're in for a dryish week ahead. Edited by user Thursday, 2 February 2023 6:57:04 AM(UTC)

No rain here this morning. I noticed that storm out to the north yesterday. Looked like a giant flying saucer from here. Talking of Cyclone Yasi, I think it crossed the coast 12 years ago tonight. How time flies.

Same here Ron we had storms go over and It sounded heavy I expected to see 20mm + in the gauge this morning but only 11.5mm. Funny how it’s like that then other times I think we didn’t get much and walk out to the gauge and go holy [censored]we got way more than I thought. |

Bit of that force field moved this way last night 28. Seemed to be big storms all around. Lots of lightning. Very colourful radar. Only 5.5mm here.

Dunno if anyone has noticed but the South Johnstone bureau rain recording data is completely failing, i picked this up a few months ago I was very suspect on the data coming from south johnstone always way way lower than surrounding stations, the totals for november and December were really suspectly low. This has continued on in janurary. I was watching the radar all day yesterday as I always am and they were getting solid yellow sections coming through and sure enough today south johnstone reports 0mm while stations all around getting good rain. I have seen this failure with warner street in port douglas as well.
I don't bother to communicate this with the bureau as Im pretty sure they have banned discussion with me and they are mostly a bunch of oxygen thieves who seem to know less about their own data then keen members of the weather community |

Still waiting on last years data for cape tribulation it must be on horse and cart still on its way down to Melbourne head office. Same as mossman mill. Im still waiting for answers on why Mossman south alchera drive has not been reporting since june 2020, and why Daintree Village has not been reporting since late 2021 this was still being "investigated" last i heard from them a year ago. The only up to date station in our entire Douglas shire is Whybanbeel valley who knows how long it will be before they stuff that one up too. Why is it that the innisfail region has multiple multiple recording sites in a small area yet the entire douglas shire has one up to date station... I get very frustrated about this an agency with a budget of tens of millions cant do something as simple as record rainfall reliably yet people like bunyip and myself can do it for free on a daily basis without people having to wait 3 months to see how much rain we have had. |

South Johnstone is a good one to have operating. Very wet there. The January 1981 figures for that station are incredible. Puts the Townsville rain event from a couple of years ago in the shade.
