Things are really becoming very dangerous. Please stay alert.

The latest warnings has requested the SEWS for the Toowoomba area. 9 cm hail reported. I also noticed a red signature on the doppler. That red signature is over Pratten where the 9 cm hail was reported. The updrafts would have been extremely strong to support that size hail.

Just scanning out to the 512K Mt Stapy radar and I am watching a front coming in. This morning sounding from the GFS and Charleville Sounding showed good potential for severe storms to form out there and make their way to the Coast. I am just watching to see if a bow echo forms with this front.

A bow echo is the characteristic radar return from a mesoscale convective system that is shaped like an archer's bow. These systems can produce severe straight-line winds and occasionally tornadoes, causing major damage. They can also become derechos or form Line echo wave pattern (LEWP).

The ABC has a story on the giant almost tennis ball size hail from the storm that hit Pratten at 1pm.

"Parts of south-east Queensland have been hit by giant hailstones, heavy rainfall and damaging winds, with the region on alert for more storm activity on Saturday afternoon

At Pratten, west of Warwick in the Southern Downs region, nine centimetre giant hail – large enough to cause damage to cars and homes – was reported at about 1pm.

At MJ's Cafe in the rural township, about two-and-a-half hours west of Brisbane, opening day turned chaotic when "tennis ball-sized hail" hit.

Owner Richard Manley said the roof was entirely "smashed in" when the storm moved quickly through town.

"We basically had everyone huddled in our kitchen area because the roof came down in the actual bar area," he said.

"There was golf ball-sized hail coming into the bar smashing into the counter."

It is not quite over as another system lis situated to the West of Brisbane at 15:41. It is visible on the Radar but also on the Satellite imagery. With the Infrared and Zehr you can see the extreme cold uppers that has caused the extreme hail in some places.

The Insurance bill from just today alone will be astronomical. The doppler is still showing strong winds meaning hail could still be present in these cells.

Just a quick write up for today

After several days of model consistency, today’s model soundings confirm a highly unstable atmosphere across much of SE QLD, with subtle differences between inland and coastal locations that will shape how today unfolds.

Technical Summary
Brisbane: CAPE 2050 J/kg, LI –5.1°C, SWEAT 333, PW 37 mm — a humid and unstable profile, with a weak cap (CIN 38 J/kg) likely to give way later this afternoon as heating peaks. Low LCLs and good moisture depth point to efficient rainfall and hail production once convection begins.

Gympie: CAPE 2160 J/kg, LI –5.4°C, SWEAT 358 — even more unstable than Brisbane, with slightly drier air aloft and weaker inhibition (CIN 23 J/kg). Storm initiation should be easier here, with large hail, strong winds, and heavy rain the main risks.

Dalby: CAPE 1346 J/kg, LI –3.8°C, SWEAT 480 — slightly drier at low levels but still unstable. A strong surface trough and boundary interactions could trigger high-based storms that may produce downbursts or gusty winds before drifting east into richer moisture.

Wind shear overall remains moderate, supporting mainly multicell or organised storm structures, with isolated rotating updrafts possible where local boundaries interact.

To Put It Simply
The atmosphere today is very unstable and still primed.
Storms are most likely to fire inland through the early afternoon — around the Darling Downs, Gympie, and northern SEQ inland zones — before spreading east later in the day.

These storms may become severe, bringing large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. So please once again, these are my take on the potential.

So keep an eye to the sky and radar and listen for any warnings if storms develop and become severe. If you were impacted by the storms I hope you are safe and well, and sorry for any damages you may have suffered. Today should not be as wide spread and should be less severe as in the area impacted compared to yesterdays widespread path of destruction , so still stay vigilant just in case you are in the firing line.

IMG_5637.jpeg

IMG_5638.jpeg

I have also posted the LI and Cape values to show where storms may form today.

It has been a warm and muggy afternoon with a very strong Northeasterly blowing. The official Sounding from the airport was slightly weaker in values than the GFS I posted this morning. I didn’t have time this morning to wait for the Soundings. it appears the edge of the storms had been trimmed back a bit as the storms from yesterday and last night would have eroded into some of that fuel. Which was a good thing after yesterday’s hammering in many areas.

But below may be the start of a couple of small cells. It will be interesting to see if they thrive in this atmosphere and may tell how the rest of the afternoon and evening may pan out.
