Some big rain totals in Brisbane last night. Was watching the radar from late afternoon but nothing on the Sunshine Coast. Feel like we may get something today or tomorrow although hopefully nothing like a few weeks ago. Council are still cleaning fallen trees from nearly 4 weeks ago and still heaps to be cleared away yet. Did anybody get hail last night?

Just one more image for today. Built from BOM data for total rainfall since 9am yesterday. It is a bit rough, but gives you an idea of where the rain fell. Zero in OceanView Angry

I quite amazed of the difference between the storms on the afternoon that struggled to come off the range and then die as it moved east compared to the storm that moved right up into Brisbane last night that by contrast had the legs to do so. Just go to show how the situation can evolve as I though in the afternoon that was all that was to happen.

Even though I only got the edge of the Brisbane storm last night the rain was so good to see. And also to see that Brisbane can get a decent storm with the pathetic season we had so far. Looking forward to see how today and tomorrow goes. I still have a long way to reach the December rainfall average.

Great input everyone, much appreciated.

I am waiting with great interest to see the 1100 sounding although it only gives a slice of the atmosphere for a small area. Today is warming up and the cloud cleared pretty quickly. So it is keep a close eye on today.

Friday could be a beauty if the timing with the Southerly change is correct. Both days have positive and negatives so just waiting and watching as I am trying to do some work.

Hopefully some nice rain would be great.

Cheers

Col.

Here is today's sounding from Brisbane and pretty much reflects the GFS charts above.
If you get under a storm today there should be a good drink, because they will be very slow moving again.

Yeah there is plenty of instability/energy in the atmosphere and weak sheer especially in the mid levels which should create slow moving storms. We just have to crack 33°C and over to get the storms going a bit earlier this afternoon, but in saying that, like yesterday they were able to build on the outflow boundary they created, which means if we can’t break the cap earlier there is still the good chance as the evening arrives and moisture levels rise we have another scenario similar to Wednesday night.
Colin Maitland.
