The haze thickened here during the day and started to thin later in the afternoon. Simply terrible weather we have presently. My weather station have a thin coating of dust even on the more hidden spots. I might need to give it clean sooner than I had hoped for.

Humidity was still low today but has improved slightly from yesterday. The dew point fell to a low of -16 C and relative humidity down to 5% which risen to 20%. Relative humidity have been below 25% for 36 hours straight. Gusty W to NW winds have remained all day.

There is a tiny glimmer of hope right at the end of the extended range GFS on the 12z run, for some rain in 13-14 days time. So far out though, the chances of it happening are very slim, but hey.... something to look at for now!

Yep. Nice and clear here too.
Looking at a sat image from around 40 minutes ago, the dust is way offshore now, however smoke is still streaming out of the Gold Coast Fires. The plume is amazing. I would reckon a good 1000km long now.

Still plenty of smoke haze at especially over the hinterland. I heard on radio news 47 un contained fires in NSW currently.I think l heard 20 homes lost?

Came across this picture last night taken from a domestic flight over Brisbane.Cool

ACC g got more of the same for the next 5-6days.Continuing to build the heat and dry. Chance of some onshore showers on tuesday arvo' perhaps

Don't apologise, I love seeing them.
Great shot showing the size of the smoke from the fire compared to the typhoon approaching Japan.

Gusts on Monday

Southwesterlies still on track to get pretty gusty on Monday especially around higher ground along the Great Dividing Range.... so we're not out of the woods yet with fire dangers.
The main peak in these winds looks to be in the afternoon.

Fortunately from Tuesday, winds look to ease back a fair bit for most of the region (apart from some parts of the coastal fringe & islands as winds turn southerlies) which means fire dangers should also decrease.

That's brilliant Ken. Love your graphics.

Would you attribute these winds to the low in the Tasman sea and the High Pressure system in the Great Aussie Bight?

(Sorry, newbie question and still leaning... Is it the air moving from the High to the Low, that causes the winds?)

It's definitely time for this weather to let up. Constant light to moderate and quite gusty WSW to WNW winds with slightly higher speeds compared to yesterday (maximum gust of 48kph). Winds have been constant since Friday morning with no periods of calm of least 1 minute during that time. Humidity improved slightly today but still low with relative humidity between a high of 28% and a low of 7% this afternoon (presently 18%). Dew point have been below 0 C for over 48 hours, and fell to a low of -16 C this afternoon.

Morning all, cool, sunny & clear out here, 15C. Getting real sick of this damn wind but plenty more to come I suspect. Been reading about this SSW phenomena, Sudden Stratosphetic Warming over the antarctic. Scary stuff if it means no worthwhile rain until maybe Jan?
Horrible news with houses burned by bushfires last few days. Looked into the gutters yesterday, full of leaves, ideal fire starters from flying embers.
Decided to plug gutter drains with tennis balls, in case of a fire around coming close, we fill them up with water, which we will need to buy now.

Referring back to Kens post yesterday in regards to the predicted winds for today, and I have to say I am feeling a little uneasy at this point in time. The winds are a lot more turbulent, stronger and colder. Definitely not out of trouble yet. A different feel about it today and a different beast to contend with.

The airport is sitting on 18°C, feels like 8.9°C and -2°C dew point.

The jetstream above Brisbane is hitting a 160knots, or 296 km/h. That is causing all sorts of mid to lower level turbulence.

Great use of tennis balls.
I was looking at gutter plugs for my place and they are a fortune of a round piece of hard sponge. I would need over 10 of them, so I will have a test with tennis balls. I wonder if they would float???

Very smokey here at the Tweed atm. Looks to be coming from the Yamba National park fire on sat pic from NSW BOM.
I reckon the smoke pollution is the worst it has been here all week. The smoke is quite thick .
The smell coming inside and fine dust settling inside.

Brisbane airport dew point MINUS 14.1deg c!!! at 3.50pm with a westerly.

I meant to say, thanks for all the posts .The coverage of this unusual event on this forum has been great.BigGrin
