The radar is looking quite impressive now. BOM has issued a new Severe Thunderstorm warning at 3.47pm covering a wide area of SEQ.

Hi Aussie Girl,

Pretty impressive sweep on the radar there. Thanks for sharing.

Thunder and lightning over our area just North of Brisbane atm. Last night we had a pretty good storm that lingered on for a while, it cleared around 02:30 and finally got a bit of sleep.

We currently have a nice feeder band driving a train of showers and storms from way out west as can be seen on the 512K radar.

Tomorrow is still looking like a good storm day as well.

Some big storms firing off and some damage already being reported. Looking at the sounding for today and once again storms will just fire off as there is no caps, lots of shear, the atmosphere is primed.

Listen and act on any warnings you hear and see.

Unfortunately BoM have missed the mark once again with their warnings. They have completely missed or ignored the heavy rainfall down on the Gold Coast with heavy rain and flash flooding in some places. Storms are working their way towards the Coast yet no warnings have been issued for heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding.

Here are the warnings

Latest STW. Mudgeeraba. received 87mm in 1 hour which caused flash flooding. But other areas also received high rain rates.

Unfortunately another fail by BoM. Heavy rain has caused a ceiling at a grocery store at Morayfield to collapse. Hail has been reported and flash flooding.
I don’t know what has happened today. It was unfolding on the radar and there was plenty of notice that today was going to be another big storm day. But no warnings for the Coastal areas and CBD. I definitely know what is classified as a Severe Storm and they had been meet. For myself it is not a real problem but many people rely on BoM to make decisions or to be prepared. With the upcoming storm season possibly being quite nasty things need to be tuned up a bit better.

It is a bit baffling why there were no warnings about the storms and heavy rain for the coastal area. This was the 128k Mt Stapylton radar image at 5.05pm this afternoon which showed the storms and heavy rain heading for Caboolture/Morayfield and the rain and storms down the Gold Coast.

I found it very interesting reading the ABC news with regards to BoM’s lack of a warning for the Gold Coast, they only issued a warning well after the storm had struck. But the Lord Mayor was quoted, and rightly so as per the article

. Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said the Bureau of Meteorology failed to provide an adequate warning to residents.

He said a severe weather warning was issued on Wednesday after the storm had already hit.

"They just got to do better and review it — if the software isn't giving them the right information, start looking around," he said.

"I know Mother Nature's unpredictable, but gee, you don't send people that it's going to rain when it's already pouring down."

Bureau of Meteorology has been contacted for a response.

The same can be said for Morayfield. It was not up to scratch and posed quite a risk for many residents and business owners. For whatever failure on the part of BoM may have been, it needs to be rectified rapidly as we head into storm season.

Tonight's news showed the damage to properties in Morayfield and mentioned that the Moreton Bay City Council is demanding answers as to why there were no BOM warnings for that storm.

There was substantial damage to a number of business properties and the SES received 90 calls for help in Moreton Bay area. Thankfully no one was injured but it could have quite easily been a different story as this article on the ABC News website shows. Here is an extract from the article:

"In Morayfield, the ceiling of Red Dragon Martial Arts centre caved-in under heavy rain.

Brisbane martial arts trainer Arryn Cox said he used himself as a "human shield" to protect his nine-year-old student as the roof of the studio collapsed.

"I basically used myself to cover her just as the ceiling started to fall down, thankfully she was safe and not injured" he said.

"It was a case of where I wasn't thinking or feeling and just went into protection mode".

Owner Brett Fenton said the studio was full of students when the rain poured through.

Quite a nice afternoon storm just heading over the top of us right now. Nothing severe but very lightning active and lots of deep rumbles. There was a small chance of a storm for this afternoon and it could of gone either way. So a very pleasant way to finish a nice spring day before the extreme humid weather that is expected this summer.

The modelling system shows possible weak storms again for today. But due to a few factors it is like relearning how to forecast some of these storms due to the changing climate.

I was listening to the news after the large storm system from last week and the failure on BoMs part to issue warnings. But I am not not going to dwell on that, what was interesting was the comment made by a meteorologist working for a private company, we used to al be on the old WZ forum, and as he stated it is becoming a lot harder to forecast these storms and how severe they may become. I have to totally agree.

So even though today seems to be on the weaker side of the scale, just keep an eye or ear open for any possible warnings.

Below is what the stormcast is giving us .

A slight chance for a bit of a storm on Saturday going off the models. It is not lighting the page up with what we are used to, but there is the potential. It will come down to real time observations and the actual Sounding on Saturday to know for a certainty. So I am just putting it out there for anyone to keep an eye and ear open for any potential storms and if they do eventuate and become severe to be ready.

The sounding itself at this stage has a bit of capping to break and the Lis and cape are at their highest on the coastal border of QLD and NE NSW.

IMG_4321.jpeg

IMG_4322.jpeg

IMG_4320.jpeg

Below is EC take on the potential, it has it a little further North.

IMG_4323.jpeg

It really is a wait and see. It has been a while since we have had a “Wow this is going to be massive storm day” showing up on the modelling. There was only a few storm days last summer that you thought this was going to be big and it was. A total new pattern seems to be emerging.

That is interesting Colmait. Only this morning my husband commented to me that "the weather seems weird". We thought it would storm today for sure it was so hot and humid but all we had was a few minutes of rain.

Looking forward to the cooler day tomorrow.
