Thanks for the pics SM, I thought I replied yesterday but seems to have not loaded. Did you have to trim the sleepers to slip them in? I was going to build a garden bed with them but I need 22-24 of them so a bit pricey, although Arnel were around $65 each.

Ended up with 54mm from the last 5 days or so. 140mm for the month
Records for
2023: 2710mm
2024: 1884mm (no records April-Sept)
2025 711.6mm

They fit straight in Ron. They're the same width and length as the standard fence rail. Pricey alright, I only did the panels that required it.

No rain here overnight, GFS rainfall forecast looking good from early next week at the moment.

Hi all,

New to this forum. Just moved to Cairns a week ago and awaiting the big wet. Grew up in Broome, but the weather is so much more exciting here. Too many times the Dampier Peninsula would push a potential Broome cyclone back out to sea. Was in Mission Beach during Cyclone Larry though, which was quite the experience!

So, now onto my username... I've been looking at some latest weather modelling and do I dare say it, looks like a cyclone could form off the FNQ coast next week. Nothing from BOM yet, but that ain't where I'm looking. Maybe they don't want to fear monger, but this one could be a beauty.

Let's see if I live up to my username Scared But, that's why we're here ain't it? Because we have a thing for the weather...

At least she's gonna get wet ThumpUp

Hi mate...Welcome..Hope you have already stocked up on bread and milk then..!

Nice chart SM...Bout that time of year again ..things will very likely ramp up over the next couple of weeks as they do this time every year...

I certainly would appreciate the cooling effect of the rain and a good creek flush would be lovely...!..a spinner can stay the hell away from here though hopefully...

Welcome mate, we've had a very average start to the wet so far. Hopefully your right and a nice monsoon burst is on the way. The GFS is in agreement but has the low moving down Mackay way at the moment.

15mm here in the last week. GFS rainfall forecast has gone a bit to [censored] at the moment.

2025 YTD: 157mm
2024 YTD: 614.5mm

Edit: If Darwin doesn't have a monsoon burst by tomorrow it is the latest on record, so I've read. Records began in the 50's.

The differences from one forecast run to the next is just crazy...it seems these models just make a stab in the dark and print it...

why the BOM even bother with 10 day forecasts is beyond me...a bit like half the public service...pointless but at least it gives people a job..

It also seems to be virtually pointless to take any notice of them until the event is actually happening...

and stuff-all forecast for Darwin the in the week or so except for "possible storms"..

Any rain would be a godsend here just to break this oppressive heat..definately going to have to look into getting air-con at some stage..

I've been reading a book in the A/C bedroom for the last hour and a half. :)
Came out and decided it was beers under the rambutan tree time.

Been watching the radar waiting for something to happen. Thinking I'll jump on the mower
just before it gets here.

We've only got a couple of km of road left to gravel here, don't need a big event but I want rain
and don't care if it delays the finish for a bit :)

Cheers

Just finished mowing the yard and it's still very hot and humid out there. Forecast rainfall looking good again today, thank goodness. The big green frog in the gutter is going off so maybe that's a sign.

The rambutan tree idea sounds good to me Bunyip.

Yep its good beer weather for sure...

Bloody forecasts though...one saying possible storms for the next 10 days with some heavier rain at the end of that period and the other suggests building an ark might be neccessary with over 1000mm...

Your right Scott, the models change with every run. Yesterday looked pretty miserable but now very good.

The latest GFS from Tropical Tidbits.

1273mm for the Townsville area, would be amazing.

32.5mm here overnight. A good start. Some of the showers were quite heavy.

Just a few sprinkles here so far but lots of moisture in the coral see and a line looking like coming onshore from Cairns and along up to Bunyips house shortly...whereas to the south its just hanging offhore for now...

Just a waiting game at the moment isnt it..!

edit 3.45pm....and now we have gone from 500-1000mm forcasts over the next 10 days regionally to 150mm in the space of a single model run....I'd be emabarrassed to chop and change like that...jan25111.jpg

GFS at Tropical Tidbits saying the same thing at the moment Scott. That pesty low off Brisbane forms well east of here and slowly moves south. Normally that means not much rain here. But that could all change in the next run.

gfs_mslp_pcpn_frzn_aus_46.png

It has looked threatening here today but only 4mm so far.

Edit: It's official from the ABC, Darwin has the latest monsoon onset since records began. Maybe not arriving for a couple of weeks also.
