The smoke here at the Tweed is thick enough to block out quite a bit of the sun

Took this snap from home about 4.30pm.

I said to myself. I wonder if this is thick enough to keep temps' below the forecast max?

Looking at the obs' for Coolongatta. In fact the temps' remain the same as the warmth underneath trapping the heat in?

Still around 21deg c .Hasn't dropped after diurnal max at 2pm.

After the dew point almost rose to 0 C in early morning, the dew point once again starting falling in the morning and fell to -20 C in the afternoon. The dew point have since recovered to -9 C. Relative humidity have been falling today and remained low to a low of 4% this afternoon, though it was not at the minimum for too long and have since risen to 15%.

The wind have been very gusty and increased in the morning and continued in the afternoon. Maximum gust of 54 kph and maximum sustained winds of 27 kph. Winds have eased sligthly but been getting gusts of 30 to 40 kph in the last hour. SW to NW in the morning and W to WSW since late morning. Just horrible dry gusty winds that doesn't help anyone and we lose any moisture we did have.

Would you attribute these winds to the low in the Tasman sea and the High Pressure system in the Great Aussie Bight?

(Sorry, newbie question and still leaning... Is it the air moving from the High to the Low, that causes the winds?)

Yep the pressure gradient squeeze between the high and the low is causing the winds (which have been temporarily restrengthened today by the increased pressure gradient).

The surface winds spiral out of highs and spiral into lows rather than flow in a straight path from highs to lows because of the Coriolis effect caused by the earth’s rotation.

Quite blustery at times at the Tweed coast this morning . Even more so on the mid coast where the winds there was a recent gust at Coffs Harbour of 52km/hr at 7 am

The winds have cleared much of the smoke away. But the smokey smell,is still present

It is good that the high pressure is moving in to reduce winds west of the divide for firefighters.
Next trough doesn't arrive until next Monday and looks weak. ACC g has a very weak precip' signal atm
Until then fine sunny weather , with smokeMellow

Still not looking good according to the latest multiweek ACCESS-S run: http://www.bom.gov.au/cl...rainfall/median/weekly/0

Meanwhile, here's an article by Weatherzone: https://www.weatherzone....rolls-into-spring/530194

" ... the 32-month period from January 2017 to August 2019 was the driest such period on record for the Murray Darling Basin and NSW

Another region that's suffered through this lengthy drought was eastern Victoria, where parts of the Gippsland region also just had their driest 32-month period in more than a century of records.

Unsurprisingly, sparse rainfall since the beginning of 2017 has resulted in record low root zone soil moisture in parts of the Murray Darling Basin.

Parts of the Murray Darling Basin have amassed multi-year rainfall deficiencies that have no precedent during the last 120 years "

Sadly this is also translating into the food we eat.

Australian grain growers will produce one of their smallest crops of the decade this year.

....ABARES expects Queensland's total winter crop will be 60 per cent less than the 10-year average, and New South Wales' more than 50 per cent less.....

Devastated by drought, last year's harvest paved the way for Australia to approve the imports of foreign grown grain for the first time in more than a decade.

Why doesn't BOM put a retweet button on their reports. It would make it easier to spread the news?!

Very smokey here today. At least the wind was under control. We had a low around freezing this morning. Earlier in the morning, exposed areas around Warwick were bitter cold with the wind. Might be our last strong front of the season. Many many hot and dry days ahead for us for the rest of the year unfortunately. Thanks for the pics and charts guys, very informative.

Very hazy with smoke today easing in the afternoon. Humidity was low today but have improved a little since yesterday and fell to a low of 19 % this afternoon. Since 2pm the relative humidity have risen and is currently at 52% and is the highest since early Friday morning. Dew point gradually rose during the day rising above 0 C this afternoon and have stabilised in the evening at 5 C which is still low. Winds have eased was only gusty sometimes during today. Wind direction have been quite variable with WSW to S winds early, variable later in the morning, ESE to ENE in the afternoon and backed to S to SW in the last hour.

It quite concerning as to the current warm and dry conditions. Considering how early in the season and vociferous the conditions are I am not sure we have the actual ability to manage these risk as it seems. I think this a taste of what is I come as conditions over a number of years have been getting worst. And when we get the rain we will unfortunately forget about dealing with important issues of water security, bushfire and an drying future when we have dry conditions.

At my location 9 monthly rainfall is 300 mm below average and if we receive little rainfall then this will be in the lowest 10% of records in November (currently in lowest 20%) for both August and September (if we don't get rainfall). 12 monthly rainfall is in the lowest 30 % (200 mm below average). 18 month rainfall have recently started to fall below average and to a lesser extend for 24, 36 and 48 months.

Hi Warwick,
What are your rain stats like out in your part of the region? Apart from a sprinkle a few weeks ago, have you had much at all this year?

Busy few weeks in the local rural brigade.

After heading to Bribie island fires, we then spent time at Kurwongbah.

Then, a rushed deployment to Woodford last week - followed by a change in plans to deploy from Woodford all the way down the freeway to Canungra.

Back that up by now having an appliance and crew up at Perigian.

And this is the 'start' of the fire season.....

Thanks for your efforts in fire fighting. Greatly appreciated.!

I think it was down to zero in some parts west of the divide to help with the fire fighting. The frozen dew on the leaves and forest floor

Interesting statistics 'falling drop' on your rainfall anomaly, confirming the BOM drought report. Thanks for that

RWM stats' today had a temp anomaly of neg 3.4 yesterday.I thought it was cold last night. Coolongatta was about 15.5 deg c last night at 8pm. But l think kt was the feels like temp' of 11.6 that made me feel cold.

People wearing long sleeves and trousers this morning . At 9am was 17.3 bit felt like was only 13.5 in Coolongatta .

Thick low cumulus nimbus ? perhaps covering the sun which is breaking up this afternoon
Picture taken at 9.00am this morning ,Coolongatta main st.
