Hi 28, I hope you and everyone else is safe and well. It's still very wet here. Had about 185mm til 7am. Small change compared to areas up north in the Daintree but still very welcome.

Power has been off since about 8 last night.

Ended up with 210mm until 9. Still raining heavily here.

Power is still out, strange seeing not even a pot plant is over in the yard.

Good to hear from everyone.
Hope everything is okay for the Mossman Daintree people.

A total non-event here.

Strangely we did not lose power, did not lose mobile, and did not lose landlines. The landlines usually go out at a sneeze. Must be all the brand new power poles Ergon has put up throughout Mareeba shire over the last 6-9 months.

Must admit I scoffed at all the hype. Looking at the rain in it I figgered over fast but I was fooled. A lot came along behind and we we're perfectly situated to get it. A fair bit of slamimg wind, driving rain and noises off into the night. Reminded me of Cyclone Joy when living in Port and watching my sliding glass doors flex in and out and swore never again will I have those. We gave up on the verandah and spent the time behind the heavy sliding barn doors on foam beds on the floor. Will be awhile before we assess things but the landline and ADSL2 have performed perfectly. Rain gauge filled up, obviously so it's anyone's guess, I think Daintree is sitting on 400+mm.
I did think shutting down the ferry a bit precipitous but when road after road was closed I figgered one should be where one wants to sit it out by 24 hours before. Have got sourdough rye rolls baking, and a chilli in the crock pot so we're doing fine. Just a pity we're still not recovered from the Influenza A that knocked us over some starting third of the month.
The silence is to be savoured...even de boidies are holding their breaths.

I imagine it was a restless night for you guys Dormant..what a horrible slug of a blow..

No wonder the massive rainfall totals and it looks like Cairns is really copping some torrential rain with no end in sight...radar actually showing the rain blob moving south a little so the Daintree might finally get a repreive and we may get some decent rain after just 111 mm from the entire event so far.

I imagine Bunyip and tropo are out and about with the chainsaws cleaning up..it must be pretty squelchy underfoot though...interested to see if they both went outside to empty their raingauges during the night...

over 600 mm from one station up there and 450 plus all over the Mossman/Daintree area..thats just madness.!

Great to hear from you again Dormant. So sorry you've been stuck with the flu. Hope you're both feeling better soon.
It was a non-event here. Power, mobile, and landlines kept running.
You have my mouth watering with the sourdough and chilli.
The birds were quieter yesterday. Thought the noisy bower birds had disappeared, but saw a lone one eating a pawpaw on the ground. The galahs were out pretty late yesterday, pecking amongst my newly grown weeds. Then the semi-feral guinea fowl reappeared. Must've realised it was going to be a non event.

I'm a newbie at this. Jasper would've been my first cyclone, with 25+ years living between Darwin, NW-WA, and 18 years in FNQ.

Chillagoe was expressly listed with Palmerville in the *Warning Zone*. I have to ask: did Chillagoe experience a cyclone or not. 😀

It was a good learning experience, without the suffering afterward. Got the outside stuff sorted easily. The inside stuff needs lots more organisation.

Around 100mm since 9am in the gauge. There were a couple of really torrential downpours this morning. More steady stuff now.

Copperlode dam up on the hill is nearing 500mm since 9 yesterday.

Still no power here.

G'day all :)
Well that was an interesting blow. Slow moving sucker meant for a long night.
The worst of it was around 21:30 to 01:00 and then it seemed to relax a bit so I went to bed.
I've got 12v flood lights so could watch the gardens get destroyed :)
I had 454mm but despite emptying the gauge it was full just before light.
Lots of trees down, the locals have done an amazing job and got our roads open
now it's just all the work around our yards.
A further 217mm this morning and still raining hard at times and just steady the rest.

Someone mentioned power, I have power on the north side of the river, there are 16 properties
with grid power in my area. We lost power at 12:13 on 13/12 Wednesday. There are multiple trees
on the lines over here and with the ferry out and no sign of the rain ending I don't expect it
before the middle of next week.
My genny has 2 deep freezers, 2 fridges and 3 engles running on it, + charging 12v system cause no sun.

Pot belly stove is burning , life is good :) Why would you want to live anywhere else.

Cheers

Lol Bunyip. Glad to see you in good humour. Hope you haven't lost too much. Even out here in Chillagoe a pot belly stove right now would be nice, at a nippy 25degrees.

We've had continual rain now, light sprinkles, and occasional heavier rain showers. Everything is wonderfully damp and humid.

25mm in the gauge yesterday at 9am.
50mm this morning at 7.30am.

Just 235mm so far for the entire event down here...

very nice soaking rain though I would actually prefer a good night of creek flushing rain..not 4-500mm though..

I have to confess with being pretty happy with being out of the firing line of this one...even cat 1 or 2 I would find the whole ordeal so emotionally exhausting..I guess thats the downside to making a living from pot plants and associated un-insured fragile infrastructure.

Bunyip so how is it that some properties have power but it doesnt extend further north..?

Good morning weather watchers :)
245mm in my gauge this morning after a very wet day and night.
916mm for 3 days.
Had some heavy rain before full light but it has backed off to just drizzle now.

And the radar is out now :( so much for going without for 3 months to make it more reliable.

Bunyip so how is it that some properties have power but it doesnt extend further north..?

Scott, back before the full on development by Quaid there were a few farms and residents over here.
Power was put on and they paid a set amount use it or not. When the big sale of blocks started Quaid
told everyone that power was coming, there were tracks bulldozed over the hill and all. These had started
to regrow buy the time a lot of the early blocks sold.
But then greenies started to block every attempt at extending the power to the new blocks, some people
wanted it and others said No. The government changed and put a block on it and the rest is history.
There are 3 power line crossings of the Daintree.

River is right up this morning, so doubt we will see a ferry service today. Maybe tomorrow if this rain backs off.

Cheers

49.5mm here this morning. Just a slight drizzle falling. That's 518mm in the last 4 days. The highest Dec total here since 2011 was 439 in 2015 so we've beat that.

The Daintree area, a cat 2 cyclone and 1000mm in a week, amazing.

Edit: Copperlode dam 714mm in the last 4 days.

Still no power here and unlikely for a few days at least. I’ve had approx 850mm in the last few days since cyclone passed. Got caught in Mossman yesterday with foxton river going over was stuck there from 9am until 2pm wasn’t coming down said stuff this locked my car and walked across foxton about 500mm over and flowing hard and continued to walk the 12km home on the highway I’m the pouring rain.
