Well the event you have when you're not having an event..
Despite the warnings and hype we have only managed to pick up 50mm here this morning.
A look at the radar shows the convergence area to the south of us, will it move north or south through the day?

Yes I like to vote in Daintree after lunch, walk in,123, walk out. See you next time :) :)

Have a great Sunday weather folk :)

Cheers

Bit of misting stuff now and then. Not worth a look at the gauge.
Nice temperatures though. A very pleasant day.

Bunyip - what's happening for the people up at Cape Trib? Saw a couple news videos only yesterday. I can see the landslide is pretty massive and probably unstable. Is the council being an arse and leaving them til last, or are they doing their best?

Just about 25mm in the gauge sofar today , just been gentle drizzly stuff most of the day.

28 the council dragged the chain, the mayor was to pig headed to call for help and the engineer was corrupt.
The engineer has quit last week after questions started to get asked.
The mayor did not stand for reelection.
They had 90 days to get it cleaned up without an environmental plan, (that ment they could push it over the edge into the sea)
That has now expired so ALL dirt and rocks trees must now be trucked away. Of coarse it is totally ridiculous that they can't
keep pushing it over the side, it's where nature was taking it without us, but hay the reef.

There are conspiracies that it is deliberate, in an attempt to reduce the population up there, but I doubt that has any reality
to it as this last lot were to hopeless to think that far ahead.

It's funny that the couple from the camping are complaining, I hear they are getting $1000 pw so the council can stockpile dirt
on their property, and the roads fixed after it is all removed. Nice easy money without the hassle of people. Some people are never
satisfied and I'm sure plenty of other locals would be happy for council to stockpile on their place.

The damage is done, Cape Trib will be getting lots of bad press for years to come, numbers will drop for years. It is going to
take 2 years at least to fix the Alexandra range, so wait at the ferry, wait at 2 or 3 sets of road works and see stuff all
because the QPWS & natives have most of it closed and the boardwalks all need lots of work, ect ect ..
I get so pissed at these fools the shire has marketed the Daintree as a destination for over 25 years, yet have done very little
in the way of infrastructure for all these tourists. If it was anywhere else in the world as a world heritage site it would be
way better managed.

Sorry for the rant.

Nice wet arvo here think I might light the fire, with the election bull they sent out. :)

Cheers

Nah don't be sorry. I asked, and you've told me what I suspected.

Might have to start helicoptering people in, and by barge, add to the adventure.

We're lucky with the council out here, we get forgotten where it's beneficial for us, but the councillors love visiting so they're pushing TMR to get the last bit of gravel "road" sealed. TMR is useless. Ergon is usually right on the ball. It's Telstra landlines we get problems with.

Ended up with 33mm this morning..
The whole convergence zone never really set up and produced like they forecast, apart for a few totals of 200 odd
it was over played by both the media and the BoM I feel.. Every weather event is now the worst to ever happen.

WZ forecast for here is WET for the rest of the week with 40-80mm the next couple of days then 20-40mm we normally
do better than forecast so will have to wait and see..

28, telstra have told us that there will be no land lines over here after 2026, not sure how that is going to work
I'm still using ADSL internet as the signal for mobile is very poor at home. I'm far from the only one who can't
get a decent mobile signal..

Cheers

12mm in the gauge this morning.

I don't have a landline, moved here too late. But there's still a few over 80s in town who rely on their landlines and don't use mobiles at all. Same thing here with patchy mobile. Will be interesting.

94mm here this morning after quite a wet day yesterday. It eased off overnight.

I think it's about time the political fiasco in the Daintree came to an end. Years overdue.

Nice mild 29°C with 70% humidity. If it's rained since I checked the gauge I haven't noticed... It's that kind of day.

It's about time that governments recognised that no-one would have anything at all if it wasn't for those of us in the middle of nowhere providing it for them.

Looks like some good heavy falls in the usual spots south with over 100mm since 09:00 in a few gauges.
I'd still like to see another propper wet day here before this season ends, stuff what it does to the roads :) ..

Been out raking the home lawn in the rain, so satisfying sitting back now with a beer :)

Looking for suggestions for fast growing screening trees that grow to about 3 or 4m , Jasper has taken a few trees out
and that has left some big openings that let me see out and others see in.
I keep chucking all the palm seeds of all types along the creek where a couple of trees fell so in time it will just
be a palm jungle, it's the high side of the creek so we don't go down there.
So i'm thinking a row of something a couple of meters in on my side so I can still get behind but have a screen till
the bush does it's thing.
Exotic is fine because you can always cut them down, if you plant natives and they get to big you can have problems with
those who know it all in local laws..

Fast: oleanders.

I'd planned to have natives on my town block fenceline, and fruit trees in the back yard. That was plan A, didn't have a plan B. Oops.

Needed screening from my west side neighbour's light at nights. In desperation I planted a row of oleanders. Within 2 years they were high enough to stop most of the light, and create a little bit of late afternoon shade for the car.

I'm not a gardener. Chose oleanders because I had one at the front I kept forgetting about. It never got enough water, yet it kept surviving. Don't know how hard they are to get rid of though, whether the roots keep growing or not.

Wattles grow even faster. Are there any varieties that like your amount of rain. Life cycle is usually between 12 and 20 years.

Edit: 5.30pm - still only 1mm in the gauge for all day. Beautiful temperatures though.

55mm here plus 95mm for the past week i was away..

Looks like we were on the lower end of the scale in the rain department although in nearly 4000km of driving I first hit rain whilst returning just 5km's south of Tully..and of course I missed the first run of dry days since January but the few days i was down in NW NSW were all around 35c and sunny and dry and dusty so the rain and humidity back home here is actually a relief..

Sounds pretty dissapointing Bunyip...you would think the first step in gaining access and sorting roads would indeed be to push as much rocks, dirt and debris over the edges then drag down any other material to stabilize landslip areas and push it all over too...

Hard to beleive they are trying to actually truck it away from the areas...after 2 bad cyclones down our way local knowledge dictates that most remedial works, tree removal and any other works that may bring undue attention from conservation-minded fools should be undertaken as soon as possible after the event while there seems to be a bit of leeway to get things up and running again..

and for screening plants there is so many options but as its close to your house then i'd look at things that attract the birds and butterflies..

Interesting to see the low in the NT that BOM said a week ago was a low chance of forming a cyclone actually hit the coast as a cat 3..Good old BOM strikes again....

Welcome back Scott. Just 7mm here this morning. A quiet day yesterday. Looks like a bit of heavier rain starting to fall again. A nice blob coming in from Fitzroy Island way.

Edit at 1700hrs: 50-60mm here since 9. Nothing really heavy, mainly steady most of the day.

Good morning :)

Well yesterday morning at 02:45 we lost power, by daylight I had 89mm and the power didn't come back on till 11:45.
The rain continued as drizzly stuff on and off and a wet drippy night has left me with 66mm this morning :)

The council put out a statement yesterday arvo that the Cape Trib road will be open to all traffic for easter
starting on the 28th .. The road will be closed at night ... I can just see this turning it to a huge stuff up
if we get a real wet night and Cape Trib is full of tourists and the road gives away..

My WZ forecast still looks very wet for another week.

Cheers

45mm here ...with a pretty nice day on the cooler side that I was able to get a bit done propogation wise...super saturated ground everywhere though .

Wow SM ..its a big wet season for cairns...a bit of a taste about what we expect rainfall wise in a regular wet season at Tully/Babinda/Daintree..

I see one place called Babinda Rainforest farm say they had almost 800mm in the past 4 days...

The last run for GFS had big totals for Cassowary coast in the coming week and latest run its already backed off significantly....

Pretty hard to predict who is in line from a visit from the blob.....I do wonder why they even bother with forecasting localized daily and weekly rainfall totals for the days ahead ..

Definitely only a taste of those very wet areas Scott. I think Cairns Airports average for DEC-MAR is about 1400mm. We've had 2819.5mm in that time. Mainly due to the Jasper event of 1141mm.
