Thursday this week has a bit of potential for a bit of a storm but the models are spitting out all different data and not in agreement with each other. It will come down to the timing of the front and the atmospheric conditions when the front moves through.

Totally agree with you and your husband Aussie Girl. The weather is acting very weird. Nothing that was forecast to happen with the long range climate outlook has come to fruition at this stage. We are still in a neutral pattern and still maybe looking at another La Niña. It has been very dry on top of everything in this area as well.

Below is GFS view of the system and probability

lIMG_4329.jpeg

IMG_4331.jpeg

IMG_4330.jpeg

And EC’s models output using Windy.

IMG_4332.jpeg

For Thursday it could go either way and may have to be another realtime observations to see how it all unfolds So for anyone reading, it will be a case of watch and listen for any warnings if storms fire off and if they do become severe. A lot of “ifs” but you can’t rule anything out.

Having a look at the latest model run from GFS and it and EC are now in some sort of agreement to what may unfold on Thursday, 24 Oct. I would still keep an eye on the weather just in case , but at this stage it appears if any storms develop they may be tending to be South of the border and North of the Sunshine Coast.

The radar is showing a good storm cell to the North of Dolby. It is quite lightning active as can be seen by the Energex Lightning tracker. I have also included the Gympie doppler and as the cell is entering the parameters of the doppler there is a fair bit of wind starting to build.
There is still a slight chance for Brisbane either late after or early evening. This mornings sounding had a bit of potential on the readings but it is a wait and see how it pans out over the next couple of hours. But those areas that were in the forecast are looking quite promising for a reasonable good storm.

The radar fMt Stapylton . The Gympie radar doppler, the Energex Lightning tracker and this morning sounding.

And the latest storm warning. At this stage there is a blanket warning out but I would expect to see a seperate warning for that cell approaching the Coast well to the North.

The latest STW for this storm system.
I would do a seperate thread for storms but at this stage we don’t have enough members yet. So it is easier just to keep it in the Day to day unless it is really severe. Please feel free to join the forum and post. We just try and keep everything simple and just talk about weather for fun and fascination.

Been a cooler and damp day here today just North of Brisbane. But this afternoon has seen some good storms sweep through Northern NSW and into Southern Queensland. Here is the latest STW and radar sweep at 15:00

Models have been pointing towards storms over the next few days for areas of the thread. Some could become severe so it would be good to keep an eye and ear for warnings as they are issued.

The 1st warning for today has been issued as below.

A very nasty cell just to the North of here. Circled in black. Lots of wind and a lot of mammatus cloud on top of us here.
The storm has been labeled as a Very Dangerous Storm.

2 small storm cells appeared on the radar around 12:15 and have continued to build. The models over the last few days have been consistent with storms for today, Friday, building East of the Ranges. I have included the stormcast from today and a few days back.
Also a blanket warning has been issued for the eastern part of the South East of QLD.

IMG_4375.jpeg

IMG_4374.jpeg

IMG_4376.jpeg

This was the storm cast from 2 days ago. It has been fairly consistent with a more Eastern storm system as compared to coming from the west over the ranges.

It was really an afternoon of dodge the storms yesterday. We were keeping an eye on the radar as we were out and about in the late afternoon running some errands. One of the things we had to do was to go over and pick something up from Rothwell (Dbay end of Rothwell). We had just parked the car after checking the radar again (around 5pm) and decided there was no problem when next thing we start getting hail. Thankfully it was small enough not to do any damage. We checked the radar again and according to the image there was nothing that looked like hail.

I don't know how to access a radar image from yesterday to check what we were looking at but it was a bit confusing.

There is a bit of a nasty looking storm at the moment between Boonah and Beaudesert as seen in the STW posted above by Colmait. This is the 128km Mt Stapylton image from 2.25 pm:

Hi Aussie Girl
The Weather Chasers used to have free radar archives but now you have to pay a subscription to use them.I have not being subscribing to any of the sites as it just adds up very quickly. So I enjoy working out what is happening with what is at hand.

The link is https://theweatherchaser.com/radar/

An example of trying to access yesterdays radar imagery

IMG_4383.jpeg

What is interesting is watching the storms trying to form on the Northside. There is a NorthEasterly blowing and chocking the storms where as the Southern cells are riding and feeding of the South Easterlies. Below is the radar imagery. The 1st screenshot is the storms approaching the Coast and as you can see on the 2nd screenshot the Northern cells are dying off.

I should also add from the previous post, as the afternoon goes on storms, may become more favourable on the Northside as well and feed of the Seabreeze. A very common occurrence.

The cell approaching the CBD appeared to have died a little but it has turned into a bit of a beast once again with what appears to be a little bit of rotation. You can see this on doppler with the small dark blue dot that is approaching the radar while the majority of the wind is flowing away from the radar. Simple terms.

A confirmed tornado in the Brisbane City. It was seen over the river. As it was formed from a supercell it is classed as tornado and not a waterspout.
