It's the population over there. The cyclone is only about 100km wide, over here, that's most likely to miss a heavily populated area. |
Records for 2022: 1520mm 2023: 2710mm 2024: 951.6mm (no records April-Sept) |

Thats a good point...Florida is also very low and an exposed peninsula that cops Hurricanes from both the Gulf on the west and the Carribean to the east.... Florida is also only about 2% of australias landmass with pretty close to our entire countries population at something like 23 million... Lots and lots of fat americans down there..and forget about the Saffir–Simpson scale ..this is how lots of americans really perceive Hurricanes.. https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2024/10/09/hurricane-milton-hits-red-on-waffle-house-index-the-natural-disaster-scale-explained/We had a couple of young Americans from the south stay with us the end of last year and all they talked about was there time spent eating at Waffle House...they had endless stories of things that happened at various waffle houses and how much they ate and spent there....Serriously we were just like "What the [censored]are these people on about".. So Milton was a bit of a fizzer in the end.. Hit as a cat 3 but still the usual flooding but not the structural damage and predicted storm surge thankfully.. Amazing how quickly a massive system like that can be affected by wind shear... Meanwhile on the home front the Marchie scale is probably a low end Cat 2 after being downgraded from an almost catastophic Cat 5 just a week ago.. Hopefully by next week they will fizzle out entirely...it cant come soon enough..

I followed Milton on the sat images Scott and it was amazing how quickly it weakened as it approached the coast. I looked up the population of the Tampa area, 3 million so it was a good thing.
I did a bit of work at Kareeya Power Station in Tully Gorge years ago and if we went fishing the best supply of bait was always the trusty marchie.
We're still stuck on 5mm for the month here.

Marchies were absolutely insane last weekend down the N Johnstone. Worst I've ever experienced. We hiked down off the Palmerston and the girls lasted about 15 minutes before we had to hike straight back out again. Literally covering their leggings, just madness. |

6mm here so far for the month, 85 is the 11 year average so a bit to catch up yet.
It gets like that Ron, I remember taking the grandaughter to the centenary Lakes to feed the ducks and decided for a walk on one of those tracks. The mossies had us running out of there, they were so thick.
I nearly fell off my chair, 8pm forecast of 0-50mm for White Rock. WOW. We'll see what happens

Haha, nearly fell of my chair as well just then:
Tuesday 15 October
Partly cloudy. Medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm near the coast, possibly severe in the early morning. Winds east to southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h. Overnight temperatures falling to between 17 and 21 with daytime temperatures reaching 25 to 33.
meteye is showing possible storm along the coastal strip from 1am.
My electronic rain gauge is showing 5.7mm for the month. |

Looks like it could be patchy as you would expect this time of year so i guess we wait and see...its started showering on and off for us this evening...
Any rain would be appreciated..

No rain here this morning. The wind was up a bit overnight. Yeah Scott, I did electrical work in the 80's and 90's. We did a bit of work for Kareeya in their substation. Lovely spot there, it can get very hot though. Spent a bit of time at the old Cardstone village which was nice. Edit: It's a shame they had Cardstone bulldozed, it would have been a great base for a lot of rainforest activities in the Gorge. Edited by user Wednesday, 16 October 2024 9:37:38 AM(UTC)

3rd week of Oct done and still 6mm of rain here. Since 2011, October totals have been between 13 and 412.5mm so it's starting to look like the lower end of the scale this year. The lawn is getting that brown tinge to it. Nice spring weather though.

24.5mm here for October, that's well below the average of 85. The 412.5mm in 2011 really helped the average otherwise it would be around 50. Cyclone season begins tomorrow, it will be interesting to see what this year brings.

Thanks Scott. I couldn't open it, but found it here. https://www.dailymail.co...st-computer-upgrade.htmlNot real happy with the new website. Impossible to set shortcuts to specific pages. At least I couldn't find a way to do it. Have to go back to home & scroll. Not real keen on their new radar either. Yes. I'm back in paradise again. Drove through inner west Sydney on a Saturday afternoon, never again. Dunno how people live there...

Yeah sorry 28 your link actually works... You gotta wonder about 866 million dollars being spent and thats the best they can do for a website..and then for the CEO to arrogantly think there is no accountability for the spend or results and being 150 Million over budget....its just unbelievable what we let our government agencies get away with... So far I've managed to keep my place green but driving up to Kurrimine today saw I lots of browned off grass...its really drying out now.. Edited by user Sunday, 10 November 2024 6:57:26 PM(UTC)

Welcome back 28. 0.5mm here for the month so far, seems low but at the same time last year we'd had 1mm. Ended Nov with 16.5mm. I must admit I haven't checked the BOM site lately but had a quick look yesterday and it seemed not much has changed, that's a lot of money. Cairns' lawns looking very brown at the moment. Nov: 0.5mm YTD: 2743mm Edit: Speaking of government money, the last time I was at Holloways Beach, the esplanade road washout hadn't been fixed since the Jasper event.
