Latest STW, Doppler radar with highlighted strong wind gust from the severe cell heading towards Amberley. Radar sweep of storms coming through at 1843

Arghhhh???? No the storm, according to BoM, is going to die just East of Brisbane by 5-10 Kms. I realise that they have stated the. CBD and Moreton in the warning but the track path has to match in these cases. Crazy

Finally!!!! STW for CBD etc. Rotation could be seen on the radar and doppler over Archerfield.

I had to make a cheap little youtube so I could show you the video of the doppler. I used to be able to upload the link to the archive that you create with the Chasers and you could play around with the speed, go forward or rewind etc.

So hopefully this works and can explain a little. The 1st two images highlighted with a black circle, show the two interesting signatures showing rotation, they are both going clockwise in this storm as that was from the prevailing feeding winds or shear. Seeing rotation does not mean automatically there is a tornado. Usually there are other tell tale signs of a possible tornado such as a hook etc. and a more pronounced tightly wound rotation. And they can spin both ways. The corolla effect doesn’t play a big roll in storm cells unlike a cyclone. Storms are controlled more from where the main winds in the atmosphere are moving. But that is another big conversation and very interesting.

Another feature you can look at is the Towards and Away from the radar winds. When you see the Away wind mixed within the Toward winds or the other way around as well, it is also a bit of a tell tale sign that there could be rotation. It is not always the case as you could have a strong change coming through on a weak storm.





And hopefully the link works and you can see these two areas rotate clockwise as they approach the East.

You can see a larger rotation of the storm as it headed over the Bay/Sea. The rotation was very weak and indicated some fairly strong wind gusts. It is not the best one to actually see what rotation looks like.

Just starting to rain here now. Another storm day tomorrow and Wednesday looking good as well.

Today, Wednesday is shaping up to have the potential of being quite a big storm day, although there is still a bit of cloud around, If that burns off quickly and the sun shines through then it should be on. Even with the cloud, I think yesterday’s heat and humidity will have helped to prime the atmosphere for today. Once again real time observations will be the real tell tale.

With Tuesday, even though storms were forecast, only a couple of small cells, albeit weak storms, formed. Most of the energy, ( instability / cape ) was spent on Monday evening with the widespread storms and heavy showers. Then on Tuesday we woke to a cloudy day that didn’t allow for the extra heating needed to allow storms to build.

Below is the sounding from yesterday and you can see the potential had died off.



I waited for the latest GFS run for today and it is looking quite conducive to storms and possibly severe with Strong Winds and possible hail. On the forecast sounding the TT’s (TotalTotals) are fairly high which indicates widespread storms and possibly severe.

Below are the LI’s and cape for this morning, along with the GFS’ stormcast sounding which looks pretty strong. Once the soundings from the Brisbane Airport/ Moree and surrounding areas come out at approx. 11:00 am we should get a better picture. These are my thoughts only, so please keep and an eye and ear out for any warnings if storms come off.

Thanks for this update Colmait. This thread is so good for keeping up to date with storm possibilities thanks to your very informative posts.


Just little bits and pieces on the radar at the moment so it will be interesting to watch things building up. The Mt Stapylton 256k radar image at 11.45 am:

The storm that I highlighted in the previous post and again in the image below of the radar, is really throwing out some good deep rumbles at the flank of the storm. Some good solid rain as well.

Some severe cells have now developed and making their way towards the North East.
