What a day! It really was hit and miss as the low stalled just near the QLD border. A short sharp storm hit Camp Hill, a suburb of inner Brisbane, unleashing hail and a microburst that brought down trees and power lines. https://www.abc.net.au/n...-without-power/104826436And the snap shot from the supercell on the Gold Coast. Maybe a chance for more storms tomorrow. |

I finally got time to read those two articles explaining Thursday's storms that you posted Colmait. They were really very interesting and many thanks for posting them. When I was reading the ABC article I realized that I didn't just imagine on Thursday that the wind was a Westerly that we don't normally get at this time of year. The BOM is predicting that we will have hot days later this coming week with the possibility of a storm on Thursday and Friday. This is the forecast for the Brisbane area: Edited by user Sunday, 19 January 2025 8:09:17 AM(UTC)

And we have to remember to keep our pets cool and hydrated as well. In this hot weather it is also a good idea to put some shallow dishes of water in shady areas of our yards for the wild birds, insects and lizards that visit our gardens. It certainly is heating up this morning and the feel like temperatures are between 2 and 4° above actual temperatures depending on location.

The AWS for Brisbane at 14:00 this afternoon has a feel like temperature of 39°C. The max temperature at this point is 35°C. Although earlier the temperature was higher by 0.7°C, the dew points were lower, now the due points are rising and so is the apparent or feel like temperature . Usually the temperature will peak around 15:00 so I would not be surprised if we reach the 36°C or the due points rise slightly higher again causing the apparent or feel like temperature to be over 40°C. It is so oppressive outside that it is just not funny at all. I really hope the power grid can cope with these temperatures as more people switch on the AC to cool down, Yesterday in Western Australian over 12,000 lost power due to the demand on the grid from the heat. A few cells lighting up this evening sky in some areas. BoM are going for possible storms tomorrow. I was running through the models today and playing with a few values to see the possibilities for different setups and it is a bit of a hit and miss. At this point there is a strong cap in place but given the right temperatures and dew points earlier in the morning there is also the chance of a good storm. So just keep an eye out and listen for any warnings if everything does fall into place. And the forecast soundings for tomorrow. The second sounding you will see I changed a few values and there is the potential for a storm and possibly severe. The 1st sounding has a massive cap and a few things going against it. And I have just thrown the Li’s in. Way, way more involved than just Li’s for a storm to come off but it is one of the 1st things you take notice of and start to investigate the potential. There is also once again a slight chance of another storm for Sunday. Edited by user Wednesday, 22 January 2025 7:37:39 PM(UTC)
| Reason: Wrong sounding ( 1st one) had to remove and replace with correct forecast sounding. |

A very hot and humid night last night and this morning. The temperature did not drop below 25°C all night but the feel like or apparent temperature was over 30°C until 04:00 this morning. Currently there are few showers clearing out and a fair chance of storms. I am waiting for the latest run to finish to see the forecast soundings. Plus it will be interesting to see the Brisbane sounding from this mornings balloon release from the airport. Once again please stay alert if storms develop and listen for any warnings. There were some very strong storms on the Gold Coast. They caused a bit of damage as well. This mornings sounding with the heat that had already built up overnight as Colmait mentioned allowed for the cap on the Gold Coast to break allowing for the severe storm cells to form. There was good shear up through the atmosphere that would have caused strong winds. The cap was relatively small compared to the soundings from the modelling system.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned Brisbane could soar to 37 degrees tomorrow, while Ipswich and Gatton could reach tops of 35 degrees today. More than 14,000 homes across south-east Queensland lost power yesterday as suburbs sweltered through spiking temperatures. Scorching temperatures reaching the mid to high 40s in some areas contributed to the power outages. https://www.9news.com.au...b-4eca-91b2-0a08c9867381Edited by user Friday, 24 January 2025 5:18:57 PM(UTC)

Thanks Colmait for the instructions on how to post with the technical difficulties (have sent you a PM). This heat has been awful and being without power is terrible and possibly dangerous for those such as the elderly who are at risk of heat exhaustion with no way to keep cool. Every day in this heat I thank the person who invented air conditioning and feel very very fortunate to have it. Edited by user Friday, 24 January 2025 11:23:41 AM(UTC)

Very hot temperatures today as can be seen in the BoMs observations page. The fee like temperatures were much higher than the actual temperature.
