Thank you for those cyclone updates Colmait. Update regarding school closures and public transport: Schools in impacted areas will close tomorrow and Friday, public transport to be suspended
"Schools are obviously open today, they will be closed tomorrow and Friday," Mr Crisafulli says.
Last services for public transport will run tonight — there will not be public transport on Thursday or Friday.Link: https://www.abc.net.au/n...98#live-blog-post-156934

TC Alfred has slowed down to 7 km per hour so is now not expected to cross until late Friday or early Saturday. This is the latest advice from BOM: The wind is definitely intensifying particularly near the Gold Coast and Northern NSW as well as the North Brisbane Coast to the Sunshine Coast. This is the BOM Doppler Wind image from 9.54am this morning:

Winds are picking up here in the Moreton Shire as at 10:30. Unfortunately I will be honest, BoM have really done a terrible job on this. Yesterday afternoon I was watching the satellite and said to my wife that the TC is actually moving to the Northeast, away from the Coast. It did so for some time and there was no mention of that by BoM. The update continued to say the TC was moving West at 14 km/h. Later on Wednesday evening it starting to move back towards the Coast. Then it stalled overnight. This morning at 4:00am in was very slowly moving to the west but had over 345km to travel. This information came from observations by myself, the News talking to a representative from the airport and what their meteorologist had observed on the models and also from a write up by Anthony Cornelius, a meteorologist from Weather Watch. I do not understand fully why BoM have dropped the ball on this. Even the representative at the press conference at Kedron Emergency Service Centre, really struggled to give us a clear understanding of what was happening, she read the whole report and it came across that she had no idea. Sorry for being so negative but I am not the only one. Is all the information coming from Sydney and they are not liaising with the Queensland meteorologist???? Something is not right. We should be getting hourly updates at least from now on.! But here is the latest image of TC Alfred. Once again, but sorry for the rant. Edited by user Thursday, 6 March 2025 3:51:54 PM(UTC)

That is very interesting Colmait. I wonder about BOM myself at times. I remember reading or hearing that some years ago the guys on a weather forum made an accurate call on the Grantham floods before BOM did (I think it was the Grantham one). Hopefully BOM get the forecast right for the rest of this cyclone. The latest cyclone advice from BOM at 7.50pm this evening states that Alfred is 225 east of Brisbane and moving west northwest at 6km/hour. This is the latest track map showing a crossing Saturday morning north of Brisbane:

. Currently in Moreton Bay shire where we are there is already some roads under water. TC Alfred is slow moving and that is not a good thing. It is turning into a perfect storm which is bad news. But please use the official sites such as BoM for all warnings ( even though I was cranky with them in post or two back) , and the press conferences from the Kedron Emergency Services or wherever they are coming from at that point in time. Very valuable information in those press conferences. There is already over 20,000 homes without power at this stage. If you loose power please tune your battery radio into a reliable news source. i find ABC 612 am to be very good during emergencies. Please stay safe and be prepared to be bunkered down for sometime as this is slow moving. Once it crosses the Coast more rain is expected. If there is a big eye, an there is a calm period, do not venture outside as you could quickly be caught out by the Northern rear flank of the storm which has a powerful sting and is just as dangerous. Once again stay safe . This is the latest update this morniing I have included the water vapour image to show where the moisture is feeding the system from and why flooding is going to be and already is a big issue. |

Well the waiting for Alfred's arrival is nearly over. At the moment the cyclone is 85km east of Brisbane and is traveling west northwest at 7 km/hour. This is the Doppler Wind Radar image from 8.34pm this evening: We have battened down the hatches and are just waiting while listening to the wind picking up strength. Stay safe everyone.

The latest alerts and warnings advise
Brisbane City Council advises all residents to TAKE SHELTER NOW from Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Tropical Cyclone Alfred is predicted to cross north of Brisbane overnight into the early hours of the morning of the 8 of March 2025.
People across the Brisbane local government area must TAKE SHELTER NOW. Go to the strongest, safest part of the building you are in. This will be away from big windows. It could be a bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, or hallway. Stay there.
In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Emergency services may not be able to get you because it is too dangerous.
What are we expecting?
The Bureau of Meteorology advises that Tropical Cyclone Alfred is moving slowly towards the southeast Queensland coast. Rainfall, wind and ocean impacts are likely to persist tonight and over the weekend.
The wind is very dangerous and will be very loud.
You will hear things breaking outside and hitting your house.
Winds could stop suddenly if the eye of the tropical cyclone goes over. Very dangerous winds could start again quickly from a different direction.
Very strong winds can knock down trees and powerlines, blow roofs off houses, and blow away anything not tied down outside. This is a risk to life. |

Our family are extremely grateful to have been spared any destruction from TC Alfred and our thoughts are very much with so who were not so fortunate. The number of power outages from this storm was huge. Qld Premier David Crisafulli said today that "the number of Queenslanders with no electricity peaked at 750,000 – the single largest loss of power from one weather event in Queensland’s history." (Link: https://www.brisbanetime...p5lhz6.html?post=p58avx)Very tragically a man has lost his life in the resulting floodwaters from this event. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued a brief statement after the discovery of a body in floodwaters in the NSW Northern Rivers region. "Tragic news out of New South Wales this evening with confirmation a man has died in floodwaters near Dorrigo," the PM says. "Our thoughts are with his loved ones and the community at this heartbreaking time." (Link: https://www.abc.net.au/n...-saturday-bom/105023400)There is plenty of rain coming for parts of the South East as shown in the 256km Mt Stapylton radar image from 8.25pm this evening: And plenty of strong wind as well:
