Yeah GT the whole Kirrily event needs some good revision by the BoM
I think they made some very suss calls, when the next real cat 3 turns up things are going to be a lot different.

Did manage 2mm yesterday morning but back on the hose duty this morning as the gardens are drying out very quickly.

We can now see some neighbors (after Jasper) and I need a wet week or so to move some stuff around and get some screening growing.

Cheers

Gee you have been getting consistent falls over the past year or so 28..must be nice to not be so dry and dusty these days...

Tropo I always have a chuckle when its hot up here and someone says maybe they should move to Tasmania because its a cooler climate or the real estate is much cheaper..

Its obvious they have no idea that the place gets awful westerly winds all year and when it turns south west and pushs up weather from Antarctica its barely fit for human habitation..

Anyway I find it really dissapointing the way the BOM is being run these days and the total lack of accountability when they get it so wrong but then persist with wildly inaccurate forecasts again and again.....in what job can you so often fail but have no concerns about being sanctioned or terminated..particularly when its a job that actually has peoples lives and livelihoods at stake..

For instance how many farmers, fearful of the last terrible drought, would have sold off stock at very low prices recently because of BOM's El nino predictions of no real rain till next spring only to find instead they have abundant feed because of unforecasted consistent rain and storms...

This is what another public funded organisations (sbs) reported...WTF...!!!!..this is where our tax dollars age going...I almost fell off my chair..

https://www.sbs.com.au/n...crossing-coast/bbf1of7ml

"The cyclone is believed to be the strongest to hit Queensland's north in over 40 years."

and this

"In meteorological terms, it's is believed to be the strongest cyclone to hit Queensland's north since Cyclone Althea devastated the region in 1971."

and this

"Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is expected to "rapidly decay" after crossing the Queensland coast northwest of Townsville as one of the most powerful systems seen in the north.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology says it could still bring strong winds and heavy rain as it moves inland."

Check this one guys 31
July this year 200 km/h @ matsauker island, you can click on just about any month of the year and see wind speeds of cat 2 and 3 strength.

The big difference is that down there they get those strengths so frequently that the vegetation and landscape are adapted to it and the infrastructure and houses are built to withstand it.

They call the winds near Tasmania the roaring forties so it must get pretty wild down that way.

I don't think they should mention cyclone Althea and Cyclone Kirrily in the same breath. They crossed in the same area I suppose.

Amazing isn't it. The dust was awful. So nice to have a house that's comparatively clean for a change.

Your right 28, how could they forget Larry and Yasi. Even Cyclone Joy in 1990 scared the heebie-jeebies out of Cairns and it didn't even cross the coast.

Looks like ex-Kirrily is about to bring grief to SEQ, or joy, depending how you look at it. When did they last get rain?
http://www.bom.gov.au/pr...s/IDR981.loop.shtml#skip

Last few days been getting some nice scattered showers, but overall I think the rain may have eased out here for a while. The mock orange is no longer in bloom, and my back door shuts easily again.

We have been getting heavy rainfall totals from a lot of storms since about the beginning of December. The ground is quite saturated. That storm that you highlighted, hit us last night and there were some big totals in a short period of time. A lot of road closures. Where I live we had 146 mm in 3 hours and still raining as at 4:00 am. About 15 minutes west of us at Samford, they received over 300mm in that short time. Flash flooding across a lot of the area from the Southern Interior, Wide Bay and the South East Corner including Brisbane.
But the heatwave has been terrible especially at night as the feel like temps have stayed in the mid 30°C to low 30° for at least 5 nights now. I have lost count and sleep.
I know it is hot up where you are all from but this is one of the worst heatwaves we have been through. The dew points have been way too high.
Stay safe.

Was that actually ex-Kirrily, or a typical Brisbane storm? Oooops...

Is ex-Kirrily the low that still seems to be sitting over western Queensland? I'd been trying to track it on the various radars.

3mm in the gauge from yesterday's scattered showers. Overcast and coolish morning.

Rain cells to each side of us. Looks like we're missing out, but there is the very very faintest of misting rains if you can call it rain. You can hardly see it, except the air looks like it's moving.

Edit at 10:15am

Looks like the rain might be about to be gone for a while, although it's still overcast.

27degreesC on the deck, nice and cool.

Always feel a bit sorry for southerners at this time of year, in our Wet Season. Lovely cool temperatures while the south swelters in heatwaves. We tend to get rather smug about it at times, since people don't want to live in the north because of the heat...

Another quite hot day here. 39°C at the moment. Forecast is for 27 tonight and a similar day tomorrow so a bit more heat to go yet.

That was a good drop of rain in the SE last night.

Ex Kirrily,(blue circle), is expected to hang around the Northwest for a few more days. We had a massive deep trough over Southern Queensland and with all that extreme heat there was an excessive amount of moisture. In fact the precipitable water in yesterday afternoons sounding broke a record with 73.5mm. BoM put up another balloon last night and it broke the record again with 74.2 mm. Just an absolutely saturated atmosphere. Ex Kirrily helped to fuel and move the trough Northeast and a low, in yellow, is now developing off the Coast. Exactly what the low will do is a bit of an unknown as the models have a few scenarios, so it is a wait and see if it does veer back towards the Coast or moves East.???

Unfortunately it wasn’t a typical Southeast Storm for us. It was pretty wild with some areas receiving over 300mm in 3 hours. It has caused a fair bit of flooding. Houses a suburb over from here, had a meter of water through them. Many other places over the Southeast have also flooded, houses and businesses. Road closures everywhere. Farms flattened once again in the Lockyear Valley so expect to see higher food prices again.

From what I saw with a couple of Bridges, there must have been a 6 feet wall of water hit at around 2:30am. Would have taken some force to damage the 2 bridges like it did. That is the thick guard rails and hand rails. On the TV those in Bray Park said they were awoken by water in the house, the last time it flooded they said it was slow, but this time they had no warning. It picked up an empty Ford Ute and it floated 250 meters down the street.

It was no where near what you had up North, but for here it was ferocious. But on the flip side, on the Southside of Brisbane, some places only got between 10-20mm. Crazy weather. And that heat wave was a killer at night. Feel like temperature of 35.2°C for the whole night.

Got to 41.5° c here about half an hour ago, cloud has come over now and knocked about 4° off it.
Could really do with an inch or 2 about now, so much stuff here that needs a drink, been dragging hoses morning and night.

The systems are just hanging around this year, don't seem to be in a hurry to go anywhere.

Yeah Col , that was a crazy night of weather in SEQ. Some very impressive totals and those soundings are amazing.

Interesting you got such high temperatures on the coast. We had a reasonable day. It's usually the other way around.

It got warm, but not hot enough to prompt a temperature check. It was about 31degrees around 1.30pm, but that's not hot. I can sleep with a doona at 30. BigGrin

As for floods, once upon a time rivers would flood regularly, leaving a residue of fertile silt on the farmland.

I remember as a kid going out to Windsor and seeing the properly high-set farm houses along the river. They were like that along the big rivers going up the NSW coast. Now people build houses on slabs and wonder why they flood.

I think this map tries to show why it is so hot and humid at the moment.

IDD67950.png

Edit: It seems to be a bit of a reversal 28. Normally higher temps and lower humidity inland, lower temps and higher humidity on the coast.

I saw Innisfail had a nice thunderstorm this afternoon, and partner and I were jealous of their recorded 9mm. I pointed out to him we're due for one since today has been the worst we've had this summer for horrible heat and humidity.
Not jealous any longer, as I was about to shut the computer down I saw something approaching us so kept an ear open for rumbles and sure enough, heard some, so unplugged all, put up the heavy drapes on the deck and lay down on the divan.

Just plugged everything in after lots of flashes and thunder finishing with one good house shaking blast, and everything moving offshore. Checked the gauge, 46mm.
The deck dropped to 8OF but is now climbing back up, hopefully not too high, but then the fans will do the trick and we should sleep well. Bunyip probably got more, as usual!

We scored a storm last night that left a very welcome 26mm in my gauge.
I had watered a few small beds around 17:30 and left the rest to see how we go, glad we did.

Today does not seem as bad as yesterday, a bit of high cloud and a breeze most of the morning has
kept things bearable, well for us locals :) My daughter and New granddaughter are visiting and
doing it very hard, was 12° when they left Canberra the other morning. haha ..

Bit of chatter about another system in the coral sea to keep our eyes on.
