Apparently Chillagoe had a good fall of rain last night.

In case you may have missed it, a helicopter crashed onto a hotel on the Esplanade early hours of the morning. Pilot died. Guests evacuated.

13mm here out of that event. Nice weather again this morning.

It sounds like that pilot of that helicopter might have been out for a joy ride.

Ahh a beautiful morning here in the Daintree at last :)
And the forecast is looking pretty good.

That heli crash is a strange one, not many choppers get stolen. Takes Cairns crime to a whole new level.
The reporting is a bit off. I'm sure they know who it was.

Yep it was a funny one that chopper crash...just lucky that kiwi clown was the only one killed or injured...

Anyway its back to a light showery morning and maybe similar for the week ahead with Sou'easters returning..

Hope some of you guys got out on the water last week....it was pretty spectacular with plenty of fish and whales as thick as the hairs on a dogs back...

We waited till first light to leave the last trip for safety and even saw a pod just 2 km's from the ramp...

Water was still a chilly 23.5c so I just observed while the missus and passenger did some snorkelling..

Hey bunyip did you mention before you got a thermal monocular.?..if so just curious why you didnt get a thermal scope..?

I was talking to a fella thats been using one on a .22 to clean up a plague of wallabies in his cow paddocks with great success..it sounds like a bit of a game changer..

A nice surprise this morning, 5.5mm and drizzle. Last time I checked the forecast it was set fair until Sunday. It does look like a bit of wet weather ahead now.

Of course the radar goes down when it starts raining. Not like people rely on it for their livelihood or anything. Pathetic.

Yes I did get a thermal monocular. So a few reasons why I went this way.
1 was cost, a thermal scope is why out of my budget, another is it's not good practice to be waving a rifle around looking
for game, and it's also not easy. The mono for finding what you are going to hunt is the safest and easiest way, then either
light them up with a rifle mounted spotlight or night vision scope.

I started with a rifle mounted spotlight, I've got both red and white leds for it and it works well, find with the mono
move in to positions and light on Bang..
Then there was a run out on night vision scopes at a price I could afford, it's not top of the line but I have been dropping
pigs out to 100m in total darkness no problems at all.

My mono will scan across paddocks and I can identify pigs out to 800m no problem, I can mount it on a spotlight handel and wifi
to a tablet or my phone, move into position all the while watching what the ferals are up to.

I haven't hunted a lot with it yet because the paddocks here are still boggy and wet nights, but the half a dozen times I've
been out I've got something.

If you have problems and want to check out either I could come for a drive one day.

Back to the weather..
6mm here this morning & a few showers today so far, and of coarse the radar is out of action..

Cheers

63 mm here over the past few days..

bunyip i totally understand why you went that way..

To just have a thermal scope and have to constantly have the rifle to your shoulder for scanning sure would be a pain....though still pretty cool that the technology is becoming available to regular hunters if you are willing to pay for it..

Anyway ATM i am just looking at toys to use after realizing that my fishing hobby is so often painfully curtailed by our FNQ weather...

and yep you will have to drop in one day though wait until my Cat h licencing is all sorted out...I have another month of probation before i can even apply for the licencing and then a wait(currently approx 10 weeks) for Weapons branch to approve it and then i can finally get my own handgun rather then the awkwardness of having to hire or borrow ones at the range..

and i have a .17 HMR in the post ATM too which is a calibre i have always wanted to play around with and should fill the gap nicely between my .22 and .22 hornet as centrefire ammo has gotten hellishly expensive.. most shooting I do is at the range so $2-$3 a round for the larger stuff is not much fun for just plinking..Crying

Hope the Bday party went OK...a few light showers here yesterday.

and patches of blue sky here today though the forecast looks to be windy with a few showers in the days ahead..

Picked up another 62mm this morning Confused only seem to get a few days to dry out and it comes back..
Cold and gray here this morning, Daughter is in town for a wedding, she is bridesmaid, hoping they get a nice break
in the clouds this arvo..
Had a lovely arvo with the granddaughter on Wednesday.

Scott, We would both like to do cat H, but the whole process is designed to make it hard and give up, My neighbour is
president of the local club, so I should just get on with it and start the ordeal..
As for the .17 not interested, used one many years ago when fox skins were worth shooting and was making good coin.
But the little pills would deflect on grass and had a lot of run offs. I know things have changed a bit with better
performance pills and other chamberings but we don't have the game up here for 1 , love my .22 hornet if I need a bit
more than .22.
Do you reload? I couldn't run some of mine if I didn't, over $4 for a 45/70 shot is just madness.
You said you shoot at the range, are you into any comps or just go and shoot a few targets?

Cheers

Supposed to be a few showers about early in the week down here...hopefully not much though right on cue a shower has started....

Bunyip I only got a range card because its neccessary for the cat H as well as joining a pistol club..and yeah there are some hoops to jump through.

I have to say i really have enjoyed going to the range at Murdering point Kurrimine Beach and set up a couple of rifles on a bench next to the pistol stalls...

That way i can blast off 50-100 rounds of handgun or revolver ammo which doesnt take long if I have 2-3 handguns in front of me with 10 round clips...and then shoot a few longer range targets with the rifles..at this point I have to use the club handgun or ones that belong to whichever range officer is on that weekend..

Heaps of fun and also nice to get to shoot some guns from some of the other enthusiasts with many different weapons...the past couple of times i have had a shot of a 44 mag and 310 cadet as well..

Once I get my rifles dialled in I might do some of the club comps in field position as well as the the practical shooting stuff...

I have all my dads reloading gear there for a few calibres but havent yet set it up and got into it as i havent done much shooting for many years..i havent had anywhere to shoot before so only have used the .22 with subsonic ammo and occasionally shotty for a stray pig on my little place..

With your neighbor being in the club it should be pretty easy to figure out what you need to do to get your licence..best take advantage of it while you can...I doubt it will get any easier in the future, mate..

The weather has been nice here but a little breezy. 27mm in the last week.

It was great back in the 80's when you could take a couple of rifles camping and pick up your ammo from KMart on the way.

Aug: 62mm
YTD: 2673.5mm

Edit: I remember bullets for a 243 were still quite expensive.
